After a weekend in the great outdoors, catch up on the headlines you may have missed and get the week started.
Man Swims Around Manhattan (and then runs/bikes hundreds of miles)
Timmy Garrett, an “extreme world-class endurance athlete,” took on a bombastic, self-imposed challenge last week he called the Manhattan Project. First, he joined 16 others for the 20 Bridges Swim — a 28.5-mile circumnavigation around the island of Manhattan under its 20 bridges via the East, Harlem, and Hudson rivers.
But he took it two steps further, first with an epic 521-mile bike ride through Manhattan along the coast to Boston, then up to Concord, New Hampshire, and then over to Albany, New York. He then finished with a punishing run along the Hudson River from Albany to Times Square, only 145 more miles in the hurt locker. Along the way, he both hurt his shoulder and got hit by a car. The beast of an athlete is 57 years old.
10-Year-Old Climbs The Nose
She may weigh just 55 pounds, but that didn’t stop Selah Schneiter, of Colorado, from climbing one of the most iconic routes in North America last week. Schneiter topped out on The Nose of El Capitan with her father and a friend after a 5-day push. She goes down in history as the youngest person to ever climb the 3,000-foot face. Check out the detailed story at Gripped.
Utah State Lake Trout Record Falls to Monster
Good grief, this is a big laker! Matt Smiley pulled it from the Flaming Gorge Reservoir on May 4, and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources just confirmed the record. Smiley now holds the catch-and-release record — which does not measure weight — at 48 inches. And given that he returned this lunker to the water, rest assured it’s still out there.
First Ascent of e10 (AKA 5.VeryScary/5.14c)
For North Americans, e10 translates to roughly 5.14c, which means OMG, that’s impossible! It also takes into account a danger factor, and this one is through the roof. And best yet, thanks to the wonder of the internet, you can sit back right here and watch Steve McClure make the first ascent of GreatNess Wall (E10 7a). And like most cutting-edge climbs out of the U.K., this one is on trad gear.
Mike Horn Tackling K2
Mike Horn is widely regarded as one of the world’s top explorers. He will attempt K2 in July without using any oxygen or assistance. While several parties attempt K2, one of the world’s deadliest mountains, each year, Horn is a high-profile climber with significant backing. You can follow along on his attempt, which he plans to livestream, here.
