Out of a tent, on the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, this spring and summer the Tougas family of Canada — dad Damien, mom Renee, and kids Celine, Laurent, and Brienne — plan to hike 2,000+ miles together.

The Tougas family plans to hike 2,200 miles starting in April

The kids will be homeschooled along the way. Damien, a web developer as well as the editor of the shoe blog Toe Salad, will head up a project to produce a video series “telling the story of our family thru-hike,” as he puts it.

As a father myself, I can say this is one of the more ambitious outdoor feats I have ever seen proposed! The kids, ages 14, 13, and 11, will carry their own weight and hike up to 20 miles a day.

The project is up for funding on Kickstarter this month. Fund the Tougas family and follow their progress beginning this spring. We’ll be cheering for them the whole way.
