Renowned Adventure Athlete Dies Attempting 22,000-Foot Wingsuit Jump

Russian extreme sport veteran Valery Rozov died BASE jumping off Mt. Ama Dablam in Nepal. He was 52.

A renowned Red Bull athlete, Rozov had more than 10,000 BASE jumps and wingsuit flights to his credit. He’s known for wingsuiting from the north face of Everest and setting the world’s highest BASE jump, 25,262 feet, from Mt. Cho Oyu.

On Saturday, Rozov died attempting a flight off of Mt. Ama Dablam’s 22,355-foot peak. According to the Himalayan Times, Rozov crashed into the mountain during flight.

The cause of the crash is not clear. His body was recovered Sunday and helicoptered to Kathmandu, according to reports.

Following the accident, Red Bull released a statement remembering Rozov:

“Those of us who had the honour to know him will remember Valery for his courage, his professionalism, his generosity and his modesty—always full of life and ideas.”
