Salomon teamed up with 11 freeski athletes to bring you an informational, fun-filled intro to backcountry skiing (with safety and style in mind).
One of the most common adages in skiing is “know before you go.” That’s especially important this season as more and more folks turn away from the resorts due to travel restrictions and crowds, setting their sights on the open woods. But uncharted territory isn’t the place to get in your turns unless you have some necessary skills under your belt.
That’s where Salomon comes in. The brand recruited its athletes from all around the country (the athletes are working from home because of COVID-19) to teach you what you want and need to know.
The result is a 10-part comprehensive crash course on how to backcountry ski.
A How-To for Backcountry Skiing
The first episode launched today, and Salomon will release the upcoming portions weekly. Athletes include Cody Townsend, Leah Evans, Stan Rey, Greg Hill, and more. That’s a whole lot of professional knowledge right at your fingertips.
“This series delves into the equipment needed, how that gear works (ie. how to cut skins), the knowledge you should have when venturing into the backcountry (ie. avy classes, weather reports, etc.), the items you should carry, and more,” according to Salomon.
“People can expect to learn the basics of how to choose backcountry equipment that’s right for them and how to use it,” Salomon team athlete Stan Rey said. ”By no means does this series replace taking an avalanche course, but it’s a great way to learn the basics.”
“The one piece of advice I’d give people new to the backcountry is aim low and start slow,” Cody Townsend added. “Backcountry skiing is an unbelievably rewarding form of skiing, but it can be incredibly dangerous if you’re underprepared.”
