Update: The ski area will not open this spring/summer after all. Today the resort issued a note: “The rumors are true — we won’t be able to open this year. We are crushed, but mother nature and the lack of snow have made the choice for us. We will be back in full force next summer and the years to come.”
If a winter of alpine skiing and riding isn’t enough for you, take note: North America’s summer-only ski resort Beartooth Basin opens later this month.
When much of the country will be firing up the grills and wakeboard boats, Beartooth cranks up its two poma lifts to serve 600 acres of skiing terrain.
Beartooth caters to expert skiers and riders, with runs up to 50 degrees steep, and a terrain park with big air jumps and rails.
It has 1,000 vertical feet of lift-served terrain, but up to 3,000 feet of vertical is available in hike- or shuttle-in backcountry skiing.
Skiing at the Basin is a pretty good deal, with a full day ticket costing $45 (half day just $35).
You can pick up a season pass for $300 if you plan to spend a lot of time near Red Lodge, Montana.
If you just don’t have enough of winter yet, wait a couple more weeks. Beartooth Basin opens on May 23.
