What would happen if a gear company upended the traditional model of high-end, slickly produced ski films and instead found a way to incentivize scrappy independent creators and filmmakers all across North America?
We’re about to find out, because that’s exactly what ski and snowboard apparel company TREW has done with its TREW to You community film project. The brand spent the bulk of the 2022/2023 season choosing 10 teams from hundreds of applications, and then assigning those teams a task: Make a 3- to 5-minute film “showcasing their community, their local stomping grounds and what staying “trew” means to them,” according to a TREW press release.
Each team had 6 weeks, $1,000, and some TREW apparel to help make its film. And now, audiences across North America can see the results. TREW edited all 10 films into a feature-length viewing experience and plans to tour the show in outdoor playgrounds all over the U.S. and Canada.
Audiences at every screening will have the chance to vote on their favorite, as will homebound audiences once the film is released for digital screening (after touring wraps up in November).
When voting closes, the team with the most love gets a $10,000 cash prize. That kind of dough will buy a lot of film equipment. Or gear. Or whatever!
