Pello Bikes founder Shane Cusick bought a bike for his son from a local shop. It weighed nearly 20 pounds, half his son’s body weight.
Think about it. That would be like an adult riding an 80-pound bike. “The bike was expensive, heavy and comprised of low-quality components,” he said.
That epiphany led Cusick to start a company, Pello Bikes, which this month is looking for support on Kickstarter to launch a higher-quality kid line.
The company’s vision is to create models to accommodate children from ages 1 – 18. Four models are currently in development.
What makes them different? Pello notes lightweight construction, better frame geometry for kid riders, and quality parts from known components brands like Cane Creek, Kenda Tires, TekTro, and SRAM.
Narrower handlebars were a conscious design choice. See the image above.
