The bed’s fabric is made from 100% cotton canvas, tough enough to withstand digging, light chewing, and general wear and tear. Although the canvas is not water-resistant, pet owners can purchase Molly Mutt’s Armor Bed Water-Resistant Liner ($17-29), which is designed to wrap around the stuff sack, then you can stuff the whole bundle into the fabric cover.

The cover arrives pre-shrunk and is fully machine washable, a major plus for maintaining cleanliness, especially for dogs that track in dirt or shed heavily (both of which describe my dog).

By far, the most unique feature of this bed is that it was designed to be stuffed with upcycled materials, like old towels or clothing. This reduces waste and allows you to control the firmness and fill the bed to suit your dog’s needs.

Molly Mutt also offers an add-on bolster pillow, the Pillow Pack (S, M/L, Huge, $20-24), which Velcros around the short side of the bed and provides additional comfort. Of course, we know that having to source and insert your own stuffing isn’t convenient for everyone.

Depending on what you fill the bed with, it might not provide the same level of support as a more structured foam or orthopedic bed. It’s ideal for dogs who prefer softer or more pliable bedding but might not suit those needing extra support.

A really fun feature of this bed is that it is available in a wide range of patterns, so pet owners can choose between minimalist or colorful designs to match your aesthetic. The bed is available in a wider variety of sizes than most dog beds, making this a great choice for pet owners whose dogs fall somewhere between sizes.

It took us a while to find enough old fabric around the house to stuff the bed, but once we did, our dog took to it immediately. When we’re not home, we take comfort in knowing she can curl up in a bed that smells like us, keeping her calm for the hours that we’re away.

The very affordable price of this bed makes it a great choice for pet parents on a budget. Although not made of orthopedic foam, we prefer the Molly Mutt Bed over our other budget option, the FurHaven Orthopedic Dog Bed.

The FurHaven bed requires owners to buy a new foam insert once the original foam becomes too compressed, and the fabric cover is more susceptible to tearing and is not water-resistant.

The Molly Mutt Bed is a great option for eco-conscious pet owners who want a versatile, washable, and stylish bed for their dog.

Its DIY nature may not appeal to everyone, but it’s a cost-effective way to create a bed tailored to your dog’s needs. While it may not offer the firm support of foam-based beds, it’s perfect for dogs who enjoy a soft, flexible sleeping surface.

Underneath, a solid foam base helps distribute weight evenly to increase circulation and alleviate pressure on muscles and joints. On top, a soft Serene Foam layer regulates body temp and keeps air circulating around your furry friend.

And, thanks to the unique couch design and three-sided bolsters, our tester dogs found they could easily get on and off this bed and could also sleep on this bed all possible ways — curled up, stretched out, and any shape in-between. Our dogs — of various ages and sizes — found that this bed delivers the perfect combo of support and comfort rolled into one.

And, we humans also loved it for a few reasons. Although it required some assembly, the directions are clear and easy to follow, so it only takes a few minutes to get it up and ready for lounging. The machine-washable cover makes it easy to give this bed a much-needed refresh, thanks to our always-shedding yellow lab.

Hidden handles make moving this substantial bed from spot to spot a breeze, and the water-resistant liner protects the underlying foam layer even after a dog, still damp from a swim in the river, passed out on it. And, the personalization option—you can have your pup’s name embroidered on it for an additional $20 — definitely bumps up the aesthetic appeal (and cute factor!).  Plus, because it’s made from 90% recycled materials, the Orvis Recovery Zone Dog Bed is a purchase you can feel good about.

One thing to consider when buying this bed: if your dog is a hard-core lounger who stretches out her entire body when resting or sleeping, consider going one size up beyond the recommendations. Though the bolsters do provide awesome support and a sense of security, they also limit total lounging space, so going up a size is probably a good idea.

We got a large for our 75-pound lab and wish we had gone with the extra large, even though website recommendations indicate the large would work.  Also, if your dog likes to sink into his or her bed or they are used to a very floppy, soft bed, it may take them a bit to adjust to the firmness of the foam at first. However, we found that with a little bit of time, the Orvis RecoveryZone Couch Dog Bed quickly became our girl’s favorite! 

This beefy, supportive, comfy bed will last for years and is ideal for super active adventure dogs of all ages, including both puppies who are just getting started and older dogs who want to recharge faster. 

Fully compressed, the medium sleeping bag takes up slightly more space than a Nalgene water bottle — a huge win when space is paramount. Thoughtful features like elastic loops at each corner to stake down the bed, an insulated neck baffle to reduce draft, a water-resistant shell, and an integrated pad sleeve (Highlands Pad sold separately) for extra cushion and insulation make this a standout camping bed.

Much like your own sleeping bag, this dog sleeping bag lacks a padded/foam base. If you want more insulation and cushion for your dog, the Ruffwear Highlands Dog Pad ($40-60) is designed to tuck into the sleeping bag seamlessly. However, if saving space is your goal (e.g., backpacking), we recommend skipping this and instead piling your extra clothes underneath the bag.

When it comes to cleaning, this bed should be treated like your personal sleeping bag. While synthetic down is less sensitive to water and detergents than goose down, it’s important to follow the bed’s washing instructions to extend its life. Cold water, mild detergent, a gentle wash cycle, and a low tumble dry with a tennis ball really does the trick.

If you’ve hemmed and hawed about how to keep your dog warm and comfortable on camping trips–should you pack an extra foam pad, use extra layers of clothing, or, if your pup is small, bundle them into your sleeping bag with you? This dog bed is the answer. Its travel-friendly and insulative properties make it our go-to for camping trips, ensuring our pups are just as comfortable as we are. We rest easy knowing they’re resting easy!

With a durable nylon base, waterproof mattress liner, and Sherpa fleece topper, this bed will keep your dog comfortable while standing up to the wear and tear of travel and outdoor adventures. The one caveat of the liner is that it makes quite a lot of crinkly noises, which is something to keep in mind if your pup likes to toss and turn, if he/she struggles with strange noises (the bed will take some getting used to!), or if you are a light sleeper.

The bed more than makes up for the noise, however, with its many ingenious characteristics. For starters, the pillow of the fleece topper converts into a sleeping bag that can be zipped around your dog for extra warmth. To keep your dog comfortable, the blanket is not made from the same durable nylon as the bed’s base, so it’s best to keep this stowed away if your dog has destructive tendencies. 

Another standout feature: the entire bed unzips like a suitcase to reveal a hanging organizer with plastic zippered pockets. Having a dedicated space for your dog’s belongings, which can be stored within the bed, makes travel even easier. If you want to roll up the bed for quick transport, the medium and large sizes come with compression straps that have their own zippered pocket for storage.

The Timberdog Ruffrest Sporty also includes a mesh water bottle pocket that can hold up to a 48-ounce Nalgene, a medical/emergency ID card and travel checklist, a shoulder strap that doubles as a safety leash, hooded trim on all zippers, and reflective loops on each corner.

We particularly loved the loops, which can be seen at night and can be used to stake the bed into the ground or attach carabiners for hanging the bed up or tying it down. Our testers really appreciated these features and the overall bed’s design — fellow dog lovers clearly made it!

To clean the bed, simply remove the foam and inner organizer and toss the bed in the washing machine. Be sure to let it hang dry, as putting it in the dryer will shrink it.

Of course, with so many unique features, this dog bed is more expensive, which may deter some dog parents. The noisy nature of the bed, coupled with the fact that you may not want or need every feature this bed offers, may make it hard to shell out this amount of cash. However, if you are looking for a workhorse of a bed that takes the hassle out of travel and is made with love and care, this is a fantastic choice.

However, the bolster could make stepping into bed difficult for older dogs or those with joint issues, so if you need a supportive bed for an older dog, you may prefer the Orvis RecoveryZone Couch Dog Bed. Additionally, the firmness of the foam could take some getting used to. Once broken in, though, this bed promises to hold its shape, ensuring a supportive sleeping surface for years.

One of the highlights of this bed is the durable cover, designed to withstand moderate chewing and scratching. The microfiber material mimics the sensation of pawing at loose earth, making it a great choice for dogs who like to dig before lying down. You also won’t have to worry about the fabric tearing. As an added bonus, it’s machine washable, making cleaning the bed a breeze.

One thing to note is that the fabric is not water-resistant. To avoid mold buildup in the memory foam, we suggest steering your dog away from the bed if you both went for a swim or got caught in a particularly heavy rain storm. We found that wiping away dirt and stains was not as easy with this bed as with others, so we had to wash it more often.

Of the home-specific dog beds we reviewed, the Casper Dog Bed is by far our favorite choice. Although it is one of the more expensive options, the durable construction and use of memory foam make it worth the price. This bed provides superior comfort and looks great in any home.

The minimalist design fits in with any design, and Casper offers three colors to choose from (blue, gray, and sand). Thoughtful additions such as sewn-in pockets to hide metal zippers (which protect floors from being scratched) and dig-proof fabric show us that the team at Casper took great care in designing this bed.

If you’re worried about whether your dog will love this bed and are therefore hesitant to spend the money, Casper offers a 30-night risk-free trial, and returns are free. The company’s superior customer service is the final selling point for our team. Bottom line: We can’t say enough good things about the Casper Dog Bed!

However, the foam is thinner and flimsier than that of other beds, and over time, the FurHaven has degraded and will definitely have a shorter lifespan than others. If you want a more durable, budget option, try the Molly Mutt Bed.

The faux fur and suede cover is extremely soft, enhancing comfort, and is easy to remove and toss in the washing machine. However, it is not tear- or water-resistant, making the bed ideal for home use only and for dogs who are not super chewers. The FurHaven offers water-resistant mattress liners and replacement covers on its website, as well as extra foam inserts.

If this is something you expect to need down the line, the FurHaven Orthopedic bed will become more expensive and you might be better off spending more money with your initial bed investment.

Cleverly designed, this bed attaches to your car’s seat with three simple pieces: two webbing straps that buckle around the seat — one around the base and one around the headrest — as well as an anchor that slides into the seam between your car’s backrest and the seat. When not in use, the bed zips into itself for easy transport since the longer webbing strap doubles as a shoulder strap.

We also appreciate all the attention to detail in its design. For example, an included tether clip keeps your pup in place while a reversible cushion offers a soft, cozy side (which seems easy to tear into) and a durable, water-resistant side that can be interchanged depending on how muddy your dog is after a day of exploring.

The cushion is removable and washable, and the bowl shape of the bed catches all the dirt and makes cleanup a breeze. Lastly, the majority of the bed is made with durable fabric that can withstand tearing, digging, and chewing, ensuring it will last for countless adventures.

One downside to this bed is its small size. It seems designed mostly to hold dogs while they are sitting. Any medium-to-large dog that tries to lie down on this bed will not fit on its cushion so we would love to see larger sizes available to suit pups who like to catch some Zs while traveling alongside their owners.

For pups who need an extra feeling of security, the high sides of this bed aim to accomplish just that, while the dropped front allows for easy access for canines with mobility issues.

Although the waxed cotton fabric holds up against the gamut of trials dogs tend to throw at beds, it is not removable or machine washable. As a rule, waxed cotton should not be machine washed or dry cleaned and should be kept away from hot water and harsh detergents, all of which will remove the wax coating.

The inner cushion can be washed by hand using cold water and a mild or wax cotton-specific soap/spray, but the polyester interior and fleece siding make it slow to dry. Spot cleaning is best for this material. However, the benefit of waxed cotton is that the fabric can be re-waxed, allowing it to remain resistant to abuse and water throughout its life.

Although only tested for 2 months, the polyester cushioning seems to compress easily, likely shortening the lifespan of this bed. However, numerous humans confirmed the comfort of this bed when lead tester Kelsey ran out of chairs during movie night, and friends used this bed as a seat.

The price of this bed seems high for what it offers, especially compared to other, more feature-heavy beds on this list. However, if you are a dog owner looking for a simple, straightforward (and stylish) bed for your home, the Barbour Wax/Cotton Dog Bed is a good choice.

Despite its minimalist appearance, this dog bed is anything but. The tear-resistant, waterproof base holds up against the elements — snowy, rainy, or rocky surfaces all had little effect on this bed during testing — and the soft microsuede upper is lined with synthetic down to insulate against the cold, hard ground.

Don’t expect a ton of cushioning, however, which would prevent the pad from folding up to fit in a backpack. The bed folds up with a single durable strap, making setup and packing a breeze. Once folded, it fits snugly into a water bottle pocket on a backpack.

If you plan on doing a lot of camping with your dog in colder conditions, this bed might not be enough. We recommend traveling with something else to insulate your dog, whether it’s a small blanket, some extra clothes to wrap your dog in, or the Ruffwear Highlands Dog Sleeping Bag (reviewed above as our “Best Dog Bed for Backpacking”), which is designed with a special sleeve for this dog pad.

To keep this bed clean, simply wipe dirt off the microsuede upper or hand wash it with mild detergent and let it hang dry. Caring for this bed is about as simple as its design.
