First Look: BioLite ‘No-Bounce’ Ultralight HeadLamp

BioLite says its first headlamp gives users a unique experience thanks to its super-light, comfortable design. We gave it a brief test and found it a capable camp companion during this first look.

BioLite is known for clever design. The brand launched on camp cookstoves that create electricity to charge devices and expanded into clever camp lighting solutions. Now, it launches its first wearable product, a headlamp called, simply, HeadLamp.

Launching today on Kickstarter, the HeadLamp costs $49. It kicks out up to 330 lumens. It will burn for 3.5 hours at that brightness or up to 40 hours on low.

The light has a white spot, white flood, red flood, and strobe function. It runs on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

But where the brand stands out from the crowd is its comfortable design and light weight. By integrating its electronic components into the soft 3D SlimFit fabric of the headlamp, BioLite created a light that wears more like a sweatband.

It also puts the battery at the back of the lamp. While old-school readers will remember heavy batteries balance on the back of incandescent headlamps, the small battery at the back of the BioLite HeadLamp makes for a very nice balance that’s barely noticeable on the head.

We used the HeadLamp a little this summer, and the model impressed us. It fits well and weighs almost nothing at 2.4 ounces. When sitting at tables, the lamp angles downward well to illuminate dinner. It lights up trails sufficiently for quick walks at night.

It’s very comfortable for extended wear. And guess what? No bounce!

BioLite HeadLamp Kickstarter Launch

BioLite has run a successful string of Kickstarter campaigns. Thus, launching on the crowdsourcing platform makes sense.

Amazingly, it’s raised a hefty $140,000 in its first day!

For those looking for a light, comfortable headlamp for camping or hiking, this is a solid choice from a cool brand. It fits well, stays comfortably on the head, and will light up the night.
