Brooklyn Boulder’s collaborative workspace offers the perfect balance of creative stimuli and professionalism. These guys get to enjoy their breaks doing pull ups and crushing plastic.
Each week a major cross-section of the American workforce returns to drab office buildings, cube farms, and soul-crushing settings baked in fluorescent light. The lucky SOBs who work at the Brooklyn Boulders workspace in Somerville, Mass.? Well, check out the video below and wait for your jaw to drop.
In short, the entire workspace sits atop an immense climbing wall. There are stand-up desks, pull-up bars, exercise balls at workstations, slacklines, a sauna, weight benches, and an open conference table where the shouts of “off belay!” reverberate up from the public climbing gym below.
Yes, this is a “collaborative workspace” that exists in a climbing gym. It looks surreally rad. But also it kind of seems like the gym owner thought “yeah, we could get some people to work up there…” and quickly established a side business to fill some empty space.
But the founder has a vision: He believes the “chaotic,” open setting — mixed with ad hoc physical activities, from bouldering to weight training throughout the day — actually encourages productivity and stimulates the creative process of the freelancers and entrepreneurs who occupy the space.
Sure, we love the theory. And did someone say “climbing at work?” We’re game for that, too.
