From the grains American farmers must replant each year, to the tons of flopping fish culled from U.S. shores, to the thousands of cattle devouring Midwestern prairie land, America’s agriculture has a paradigm problem. These four independent producers could be the beginning of a revolution.

Patagonia Provisions, a four-year-old initiative launched by the outdoor apparel giant, is working to do for sustainable food systems what it did for responsible adventure gear. “Unbroken Ground” is its latest project, highlighting farmers, ranchers, and fisherman who are taking new approaches to traditional practices.

It’s encouraging to see an industry leader taking a big step outside its wheelhouse to promote the grassroots change many in the agricultural world have been calling for.
