New materials and features combine to make Altra’s latest offering, the run-ready Lone Peak 5, a versatile option for hikers.

Altra Lone Peak trail running shoes are a popular pick for long-distance hikers. This year, the brand embraced that by giving hikers several options to choose from — with new ingredients and evolved styles, all bundled under the Lone Peak 5 moniker.

This new Lone Peak lineup includes a revamped running shoe, a hiker, and two water-resistant variants. These four styles also introduce the Altra EGO™ midsole foam to give the shoes a more responsive feel on the trail.

Whether you’re new to the shoe or are already a fan, we’ll run through what made the Lone Peak one of Altra’s most popular shoes and how it’s expanding the options for hikers and runners alike.

The Altra Lone Peak Family

The first thing most people picture when they hear Altra is likely the unique shape of its shoes: roomy toeboxes that allow natural toe splay while running.

Using the brand’s FootShape Comfort design, which factors in biological differences between men’s and women’s feet, these new models are slightly roomier throughout.

This tones down the standout profile and creates a more consistent look than previous models. And all shoes sport a 25mm stack height across the line.

Also new to Lone Peak shoes is the Altra EGO™ foam midsole (used in the Escalante) for a mix of cushioning and firmer responsiveness. Beyond that, the four models form somewhat of a Venn diagram of shared features.

The low-cut models share the grippy MaxTrac™ outsole, while the taller hikers use the denser DuraTread™ outsole. Similarly, the ALL-WTHR shoes, low and mid, have an eVent® bootie liner.

Other carryover features include the canted TrailClaw™ lugs under which a runner’s metatarsal bones should fit.

The latest version of the original Altra trail running shoe, these have dialed the materials and shape to provide grip on rough terrain without compromising the feel of the ground. It’s worth noting this is only the fifth version since Gear Junkie ran in the first iteration ($130) 9 years ago.

  • Weight: 9.2 oz. (W 8.5) 11.1 oz. (M 10.5)
  • Upper: Quick-Dry Air Mesh

The taller child in the family, these are built to withstand more pressure on the trails and have a bit tougher outsoles to prove it. That said, the new colors and profile are intended to tempt you to hike around town in them, too ($140).

  • Weight: 9.9 oz. (W 8.5) 11.5 oz. (M 10.5)
  • Upper: Quick-Dry Air Mesh
  • Outsole: DuraTread™

Lone Peak ALL-WTHR

No need to be afraid of puddles or dewy race starts. The Lone Peak ALL-WTHR’s ($160-170) lows and mids include a weatherproof bootie to keep feet dry from the elements outside while letting any moisture inside escape.

  • Weight low & mid: 10.4/12 oz. (W 8.5) 13.2/15 oz. (M 10.5)
  • Upper: eVent® Membrane
  • Outsole low & mid: MaxTrac™ & DuraTread™

Natural Selection

The latest from Altra continues the brand’s tradition of letting your feet act how they want. A wider and flat profile in the Lone Peak 5 shoes and boots allow for plenty of room while providing traction and moderate cushioning underfoot.

And by allowing for a more authentic ground feel, runners may appreciate the outsoles’ more aggressive lugs when climbing their way to the top — whether they’re running or walking. Check out the differences and see what’s right for you.

If you’ve run in them, check out the hikers. You’ll get more protection, but they keep the familiar footbed and feel.
