“Out of an abundance of caution,” Anker Innovations last week recalled 5,600 Everfrost battery-powered coolers in North America. According to Anker, a “small number” of batteries may pose a fire safety risk due to overheating.
Though the brand said about 0.04% of lithium-ion batteries might be defective due to a manufacturing defect on a single production batch, it advised any customer who owns an EverFrost 30, 40, or 50 Powered Cooler — and those with an Anker Detachable Battery for those coolers — to immediately stop using the device and submit a warranty claim.
“Although only a small number of batteries may be affected, out of an abundance of caution, we are reaching out to customers to initiate a targeted recall of the affected batteries,” Anker wrote in its recall.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Anker received five reports of “overheating, smoke and/or fire” relating to the defect. There have been no reports of injury.
Recall Details
Affected coolers were sold nationwide are large retailers like Best Buy and online via Kickstarter from May 2023 through September 2023. The coolers retailed between $250 and $950.
The model numbers for the products included in the recall are:
- Anker EverFrost 30 / A17A0
- Anker EverFrost 40 / A17A1
- Anker EverFrost 50 / A17A2
- Anker Detachable Battery Pack (sold separately) / A17B0
Anker notes that customers who purchased an EverFrost cooler after December 6, 2023, already have an updated battery design, and are not affected in the recall.
Also, customers whose EverFrost cooler has a carton and outer box (top surface) marked with a “latest version” label have an updated battery and do not need to submit a warranty claim.
Anker Cooler Recall: What Owners Should Do
If you own an affected EverFrost cooler, Anker advises you to stop using it immediately. Unplug the AC adapter for the cooler, remove the battery pack from the cooler, and turn it off by following these instructions:
Step 1. Hold down the latch at the battery pack location and remove the cover.
Step 2. Use both hands to grab the battery pack handle from the bottom to remove the battery pack.
Step 3. Hold the button for at least 3 seconds until the 4 LED lights flash once.
Step 4. Hold the button again for at least 3 seconds until the 4 LED lights flash once.
Step 5. Briefly press the button again. The third LED will flash.
Step 6. Briefly press the button once again. The second LED will flash.
Step 7. Hold the button for at least 3 seconds until the 4 LED lights flash once.
Step 8. Wait for 15 seconds. The device will shut down, and all LEDs will turn off. Press button twice briefly to confirm the shutdown worked.
Once done, customers should file a warranty claim with Anker. The brand will replace recalled units for free. Additionally, Anker recommends customers properly dispose of the batteries at a facility that accepts them. The brand lists further resources for this at the bottom of the EverFrost recall page.
