A viral GearJunkie article one year ago popularized the term Lumbersexual.(See: “The Rise Of The Lumbersexual” by Tom Puzak.) Now, the Oxford English Dictionary has hopped on board, including the above definition as well as a nod for “word of the year.”
Origins Of Lumbersexual
The GearJunkie staff watched in amazement last fall as a term we’d joked about during an editorial meeting one day caught fire. Suddenly, it was everywhere, with media outlets like NPR, Cosmopolitan, Buzzfeed, The Guardian, Daily Beast, Time Magazine, and Huffington Post chiming in on the cultural observation, which was soon to be a meme and a mega pop-culture phenomenon.
It reached such a fevered pitch that it was recognized by Oxford Dictionaries as one of the most influential words of the year in 2015. It competed with other big hitters like ad blocker, sharing economy, refugee, and Dark Web.
The eventual winner of Word Of The Year? Actually, it wasn’t a word at all but that smiling/crying emoticon below. (Yes, we too are confused.) See the full article here.
So, even if you weren’t a lumbersexual in 2015, chances are fair you knew one, or at least heard and used the term. And now it’s permanently etched in the dictionary.
