Moosejaw, the online gear clearinghouse, this week announced the launch of a program designed to keep usable swag out of the landfill and out in the wild where it can do some good.

The peer-to-peer platform, dubbed ReTrail, puts the Walmart-owned Moosejaw in the company of brands like Patagonia, Arc’teryx, NEMO, REI, and Cotopaxi, all of which have used-gear programs.

“For over 30 years, we’ve worked hard to bring the magic of the outdoors and the gear needed to as many people as possible,” Moosejaw CEO Eoin Comerford said in a press release. “Through the ReTrail program, we are making it easier for our current customers to sell their gear and more approachable for new consumers to obtain gear. This program answers the rising consumer demand to incorporate eco-conscious habits into their daily lives.”

Moosejaw ReTrail: How It Works

Beginning Feb. 14, Moosejaw customers can select any item from their purchase history and list it for resale. Users upload a recent photo, description, and price, and wait for Moosejaw to authenticate the listing.

Once the item sells, Moosejaw provides a shipping label to the seller. The program only covers used gear originally purchased through Moosejaw, so no clearing out your entire old gear closet.

The best part? Moosejaw doesn’t take a commission. Instead, it compensates sellers in Moosejaw Reward Dollars, which they can then use to purchase fresh gear on the Moosejaw platform. Moosejaw Reward Dollars are also usable on rentals and in Moosejaw stores.

“We want our customers to recoup the full value of participating in the circular economy,” Comerford said. “Of course, we benefit down the road by attracting new customers and when sellers return to spend their Moosejaw Reward Dollars.”

Moosejaw’s ReTrail program is the latest in a series of sustainability and equality initiatives from the company. The brand launched its gear rental program in May 2022, while Moosejaw’s yearly Outdoor Accelerator competition aims to increase diversity in the outdoor industry.
