No More ‘Baked’ Insulation: PrimaLoft Redesigns Manufacturing

PrimaLoft’s new manufacturing process will remove a major step in production and replace it with something greener.

Today, insulation company PrimaLoft introduced P.U.R.E., a new technique that will reduce the manufacturer’s carbon emissions by as much as 48 percent. P.U.R.E., short for “produced using reduced emissions,” moves to eliminate heat from the production process.

The current traditional method for setting or “curing” insulation is by warming through a slow, high-heat oven. Simply put, removing the ovens in the manufacturing process would release fewer emissions into the environment.

But in order to remove the thermal ovens, PrimaLoft needed a replacement.

The more sustainable new process uses air instead of heat to “self-set” the insulation. Picture replacing a gas stove with an air fryer, or a pottery kiln with air-drying — the same concept applies.

“Over the past 4 years, we have been working towards manufacturing solutions that will drastically reduce carbon emissions. The result will make a significant impact for the environment,” said PrimaLoft President and CEO Mike Joyce in a press release.

The initial insulation product that will be made with P.U.R.E. manufacturing uses 100-percent-recycled material and has all the insulating properties of PrimaLoft Gold Insulation.

PrimaLoft claims that converting the production of PrimaLoft Gold Insulation to P.U.R.E. manufacturing will result in a 48-percent reduction of carbon dioxide emissions per year. A third party, SGS America, tested the brand’s carbon emissions process.

“The challenge with P.U.R.E. was to look at a manufacturing process used globally and reinvent [it],” commented Tara Maurer, PrimaLoft VP of product development.

Products produced with the new “green” manufacturing technology will be available in fall 2020. PrimaLoft P.U.R.E.’s first brand partnership is with Patagonia.
