RESCUE: Priests on Floating Tiki Bar Rescue Kayaker Praying for Help. Kayaker Jimmy MacDonald had drifted from his group on Lake George near Albany, then capsized and was struggling to tread water. He said that as he was praying and trying to right his kayak, a floating tiki bar came to his rescue. The tiki bar patrons? A boatful of priests.
SHOES: REI Co-op Teases Launch of Own Footwear Line. REI sells footwear from some of the best brands around, but next year, the retailer will come to market with its own. REI will also be using its own proprietary tech (instead of fabrics on market) to make the shoes as sustainable as possible. The line will come to market in April 2021.
CLIMB: Alex Honnold Gets Married. This past weekend, Alex Honnold married his girlfriend of 5 years, Sandi McCandless, in a small ceremony on the beach. Fellow climber Tommy Caldwell officiated the wedding. “We got married!!” Honnold wrote on Instagram. “Small family ceremony on the lake, officiated by Tommy Caldwell, totally lovely all the way around.”
14ER: Fort Collins Woman Falls 60 Feet Off 14er, Survives. Regina Stump was almost to the summit of El Diente Peak, doing some mild scrambling, when she pulled on a boulder hold and it fell. She was worried about the timeline of being rescued, so she hiked all the way down the mountain, then drove herself to the hospital, Denver CBS News reported.
“I don’t know how I was able to come to a stop, there was nothing there to get me to stop only after 50 feet,” Stump said. Miraculously, Stump didn’t have a head or spinal injury, just a broken wrist and some small scrapes.
LOST: Search for Lost Hiker in Rocky Mountain National Park Continues. Steve Grunwald, 24, of New York, was reported missing on September 10.
His car was found parked at the Glacier Gorge Trailhead inside the park, and he is believed to have been attempting the Glacier Gorge Traverse, a route that covers 11 peaks over 19 miles, the NPS wrote in its report. Rangers and search parties went out yesterday but had to halt due to hazardous conditions.
