[leadin]Most images and stories that we see of Everest are highly curated and show only the epic parts of climbing the mountain. Two climbers have set out to change that as they Snapchat their attempt to the summit.[/leadin]
Cory Richards and Adrian Ballinger are both experienced climbers. Both of the men are all too familiar with the glossy photos and epic storytelling that come out of most Everest expeditions. So they decided to show the unfiltered view of what climbing a mountain like Everest can be by using Snapchat.
Snapchat is a popular app that allows users to send photos and short videos that disappear after being viewed.
“We chose Snapchat because “snaps”—unlike posts to Instagram or Facebook—must be posted immediately from a phone’s camera. If we’re successful, you’ll have a complete chronicle of our journey,” Ballinger wrote on Outside Online.
As they make their ascent up the mountain, they plan to hand off the account to Sherpas, guides, other climbers, and expedition doctors in an attempt to show the full experience.
They hope that their story can help bring to light some of the best parts of the mountain as well as working to address the challenges that face modern-day Everest.
