Virtual Tour de France, Grand Canyon Death: Adventure News of the Week

From the inspiring to the tragic, ‘Adventure News of the Week’ presents a wrap-up of top news in the world of exploration and adventure.

CYCLE: American Cyclist Places 1st in Stage 2 of Virtual Tour de France. American cyclist Lauren Stephens won a dramatic stage 2 of the women’s Virtual Tour de France this weekend. The stage was 29.5 km.

French rider Julien Bernard won first among male riders in the second stage. The virtual Tour de France is running on the Zwift cycling platform for the next two weekends, ending July 19. (The live race was canceled due to COVID-19.)

TRAILS: Pacific Crest Trail Recommends Against Thru-Hiking. As states in the Northwest reopen and cases in Oregon continue to increase, the Pacific Trail Crest Association is reminding hikers to stay local. “Hike locally and help limit COVID-19’s spread,” the association wrote on its site.

“We support single-day hikes or horseback rides on the PCT and longer, self-supported trips that don’t require resupply if they are in your local area. Please avoid long-distance travel on the PCT, including Southbound trips from the Canadian border.”

DEATH: Arizona Hiker Falls to Death at Grand Canyon While Taking Photos. Maria Salgado Lopez, 59, was hiking off trail in the Grand Canyon on Friday when she stepped off a ledge, the NPS reports.

Lopez had been taking photos with her family when she accidentally stepped off the edge of Mather Point on the canyon’s western rim. Her body was recovered roughly 100 feet below the rim. The National Park Service is asking visitors to remain on trails.

FILM: Trail Running Film Fest Announces Virtual Showings. The Trail Running Film Fest had a successful first round of virtual screenings and will continue hosting a series of live festivals throughout the summer. The next one will take place on Saturday, July 11.

Each month, the festival chooses a new nonprofit to feature and donate ticket proceeds to. For July, festival donations will go to Outdoor Afro. Organizers also plan to launch a virtual world tour this fall.

SKI: With New Social Distancing Guidelines, Ski Resorts Open for Summer. After several months of closure, multiple ski resorts in Colorado have reopened their facilities for summer activities. Resort towns are opening facilities like gondolas, restaurants, rental shops, and more.

Of course, many towns and counties are still enforcing masks and social distancing.
