Think October is just for hiking, leaf-peeping, and camping? Think again, because snow is falling and ski resorts are open.

Ski season doesn’t usually start in October, but for some resorts, it will. Last weekend, a Banff resort had its earliest opening weekend in history. And this weekend, several other mountains are following suit.

It’s by no means a record to see ski resorts open this early — at least not in Colorado, where some resorts have historically opened as early as the first week of October — but it is impressive. So if you live in North America, now’s the time to grab a new shell or bib if you need it, wax those skis, or take a backcountry safety course. Because ski season is here.

Note: Due to the pandemic, many resorts have modified operations and may require reservations. Read how resorts’ protocols have changed for the 2020/21 season here.
