A propane accessory from Japanese brand Snow Peak has been recalled over concerns that the included “lava rocks” might ignite and explode.

Snow Peak released the Takibi Propane Insert ($350) in July as an add-on for its Pack & Carry Fireplace. The insert allowed users of the portable fireplace to operate a flame with propane fuel instead of just wood or charcoal. In addition to a detachable hose and gas flow regulator, the insert also came with lava rocks, which would “create an even flame distribution for an enhanced experience,” Snow Peak wrote on the product page.

But the Japanese brand recalled the initial version of the rock inserts over safety concerns. It received one report of “lava rocks exploding” and causing minor property damage, though no injuries have been reported.

“Snow Peak conducted internal testing and confirmed the issue,” a brand spokesperson told GearJunkie. “An investigation later determined that incorrect rock materials were substituted at the factory in Taiwan.”

Snow Peak informed customers of the issue at the end of July through posts on Reddit and Instagram. The brand also announced the recall on its website in September. The propane inserts continue to be sold on the website and are safe to purchase. An official recall notice was published on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday.

Recall Details

Newer versions of the propane insert, which continue to be sold on the Snow Peak website, are safe to purchase, the brand said. The updated version includes “new rocks from a different factory, which have been tested and proven not to exhibit the same issues as the previous version,” a spokesperson said.

In other words, the recall does not apply to the current version of the product.

An official recall notice was published on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday.

“Customer safety is our highest priority,” Snow Peak said in its recall announcement. “Please accept our sincere apologies.”

The recall applies to roughly 100 units of the propane insert sold in July 2026. Customers who purchased these inserts should stop using them immediately, the brand said. Units included in the recall should have the model number ST-332-US. This number can be found on the product packaging and in the user manual.

“Consumers should stop using the propane insert and lava rocks fireplace accessories immediately and contact Snow Peak for a full refund,” Snow Peak said in the recall.

“Consumers will be provided with a prepaid shipping label to return the propane insert and lava rocks. For replacement lava rocks only, the consumer can keep the propane inserts, and the firm will ship replacement lava rocks to the consumer. Do not use inserts until replacement lava rocks are received. Consumers should dispose of the recalled lava rocks in accordance with any local and state ordinances.”
