Experience
Tim Stevens was born and raised in Vermont, which gave him an early, deep-seated love for the outdoors. Later, a move to New York State broadened his horizons and helped him develop an equal affinity for cars and technology.
He used these interests to break into freelance journalism, initially covering consumer technology but eventually branching out to everything from hatchets to dog harnesses, with plenty of reviews of smartphones, GPS trackers, and automobiles along the way.
That career ultimately led to a stint as editor-in-chief of Engadget. From there, he moved to CNET as editor-at-large, before becoming editor-in-chief of CNET’s automotive property, Roadshow. Tim returned to the freelance life in 2022, contributing to dozens of major international outlets like The Washington Post and The Guardian.
Tim is a frequent traveler who has been lucky to hike, swim, snorkel, snowboard, and sea kayak all over the world. He lives among the trees in upstate New York. When he’s not working, he’s usually out in the woods with his dog or putting in some miles on his bicycle. Though his racing days are behind him, Tim is an avid road cyclist and still keeps up on the latest in two-wheel go-fast tech.
He’s also an avid motorsports enthusiast, amateur ice racer, shadetree mechanic, snowboarder, and pinball machine restorer.

Personal
A speech impediment meant that I was never going to be good at talking as a kid, but thankfully I found an early love for writing. That love has taken me far. I wrote everything from short fiction to car reviews while I was in school, but a video game review in late 1996 marked my first proper, professional assignment.
As my career grew, I evolved from writer to editor. I was lucky to build prolific teams of incredibly talented people at two different outlets, travel the world, and write all about it. That said, I’m usually happier at home in the woods with my pooch, getting some miles in on my bike, cutting first tracks on the mountain, or tinkering in my garage.
