Ted Alvarez

Whether chasing grizzly bears in the North Cascades, stranding his only siblings in an icy Alaska river, or drinking his own urine in the desert, Ted Alvarez goes to unhealthy lengths in pursuit of a good story. He was a National Magazine Award finalist for Backpacker Magazine’s “The Truth About Bears” in 2014 (he lost to Oprah), and contributed to Ellie-winning stories for that publication in 2015 and 2009. He is the author of Hiking Hidden Gems in America’s National Parks, The Wilderness Idiot, The Survival Hacker’s Handbook, and The National Parks Coast To Coast: 100 Best Hikes (all from Falcon Guides). His writing has appeared in Outside, Men’s Health, Skiing, Alaska Beyond, Crosscut, Mountain, The Vail Daily, Rollingstone.com, The Boulder Daily Camera, Gear Patrol, and many more. Obsessions include outdoor adventure travel, science, survival, the environment, gear, goofs, and coffee in heroic doses. He lives in Seattle, where he lives the cliché by playing in punk rock bands and with his giant sled dog Lobo.

Though I grew up in suburban Texas, I had the great fortune of spending every spare second in the Rockies, where I discovered that we become our best selves when we find our place through outdoor adventure and travel. Ever since, I’ve dedicated my life and career to helping others connect to the places, people, issues, cultures, opportunities, and stories that might put them on a similar path. It’s humbling, difficult, and outrageously fun work—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
