New-Style Road Helmet — A to-be-announced pro team will rock this helmet for 2014. It’s made by Swedish brand POC, best known for its snowsports gear, and the helmet (model name: Octal) stands out as something different. The primo hard hat weighs less than 200 grams and it fit close and precise when we put it on.
But POC focused on safety and protection more than minimalism with the design, including a shell that extends lower around the head and, according to the company, can better protect the temples in a crash. Huge vent holes let air inside to cool a rider. The sharp red shell color pops in traffic, making a biker more visible on the road. $270
