Any bike can do anything. Well, that’s the idea anyway — one put forth by proponents (including yours truly) of the idea that cycling is too expensive and too elite. “Just go do fun stuff,” we say, and forget about having exactly the right ride for exactly the right event.

It’s a concept put to the ultimate test by one Nate Mitka, former GearJunkie editor and all-around fun guy.

When his hardcore cycling friends invited Mitka to race the crushing Lutsen 99er — a Minnesota joint comprising roughly 60% double-track and gravel — Mitka had the bright idea to run it on a 2009 Specialized Stumpjumper worth $50.

What happened next? You’ll have to watch the vid to find out. Suffice it to say maybe any bike can’t do anything. But it sure is fun finding the limits.
