You may have seen this last spring, but we can’t get enough of the whacky musical inclinations of Wade Simmons, an athlete-turned-musician.

Simmons is considered one of the finest freeriders in history. The B.C. native has picked up numerous accolades over the years and was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2010. In addition to his cycling prowess, this video proves that Wade has some creative musical chops.

To hit the right notes for his rendition of Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” he “samples” his Rocky Mountain Instinct by plucking the spokes, rotating the gears, releasing the air nozzle, and rubbing his hands against the tire tread.

The result is one of the best classic rock covers we’ve heard in years; web users have affectionately dubbed the track, “Spoke on the Water.”
