$159 for Single-Speed ‘Mountain Bike’ from Mongoose (sold at Walmart)

Earlier this year, we bought a fat-tire bike from Walmart and tested it in the snow. We’ve written on the mega-store’s go at single-speed as well as its 29-inch mountain bikes.

Now this. The bike pictured below — official name: 29” Mongoose Hex Men’s Fitness Bike — is a bit of a mystery design.

$159 for the Mongoose Hex at Walmart

It’s sold as a “fitness bike” (whatever that is) but looks like a BMX/freeride-influenced mountain bike ride that could go off dirt jumps.

Or, is it a fixed-gear freestyle type rig? It’s a single-speed (not fixed) and looks a bit like the Airwolf from All City and other bikes in this niche.

We haven’t tested it yet, but thought the Hex was noteworthy, especially because of its low, low Walmart price.

For $159, you get an aluminum frame, single-speed (36 × 12 gearing), 29-inch wheel bike. Weight is about 30 pounds. The brand cites it as “versatile, lightweight and fast… ideal for anything from exercise to commuting.”

We’ll try and get on a Hex soon for a test ride. Mean time, if you’re a Walmart shopper as well as a rider looking to save some serious cash on a beater bike, this one might be worth a trip to a big box near you.
