The Salomon Adv Skin 12 ($165) cements its place as one of the best all-around running vests with the latest update. It’s always nerve-wracking when a brand changes a beloved piece of gear, but Salomon nailed it with a slew of refinements rather than major overhauls. Light, stable, and always comfortable, the Adv Skin 12 can handle everything from carrying just water and snacks to hauling a full kit (and then some) for long days on the trail.
The pack keeps its familiar pocket layout: ample stretch storage up front, roomy stash space in back, and zippered compartments for phones and essentials. But Salomon tweaked the details to make it a bit more user friendly. Editor Heather Balogh Rochfort noticed the rear pass-through pocket is smaller but angled for easier access, which was helpful on her less-than-flexible shoulders. Salomon also relocated the key clip from the front straps to the more logical choice of the back main compartment.
As with past versions, the Adv Skin 12 still shines with its fit. The harness hugs your torso evenly, but hot spots aren’t a concern since you don’t have to desperately cinch down on the straps. During an exceptionally hot run at 10,000 feet in the Colorado San Juans, Balogh Rochfort appreciated the larger air slits on the back thanks to the improved breathability. Salomon also ditched the liner inside the bladder sleeve. This may mean your water will get warmer faster, but it also makes the vest feel a lot airier.
Bonus: Salomon also updated the women’s specific Adv Skin 12 that comes with a redesigned fit in the chest area. Female runners often toggle between the unisex version and the women’s specific version, so these tweaks should provide options for what truly feels the most comfortable (Balogh Rochfort found the women’s version to suit her body quite well).
Ultimately, the Adv Skin 12 has long been a fan-favorite in the running world and this latest update is no different. If you’re looking for one pack to handle everything from a quick hike to a ridgeline scramble and a day-long slog, it is the one to beat.

The Decathlon Kiprun Essential 5L Trail Running Vest ($55) offers decent comfort, essential storage, and perks like an included hydration bladder—all while clocking in as the most affordable running pack GearJunkie editor Heather Balogh Rochfort has ever tested. After 35 miles of mountainous singletrack in Colorado, the vest proved it can hold its own against far pricier options.
The layout is straightforward but effective. Front pockets kept gels, a phone, and even dog treats handy on the move, while the rear compartment easily held a bladder of water (included with the vest). While the Kiprun doesn’t fit as snug as the Salomon, it still sits close to the body and kept bouncing to a minimum on both steep climbs and rocky descents. Balogh Rochfort noted that the bouncing did increase with a full bladder, but it wasn’t too distracting or problematic. Plus, it’s rare in this price range to get a bladder, so that’s a win.
There is always a compromise somewhere, and the Kiprun is no different. The main tradeoff is breathability; the back panel doesn’t breathe very well and runners will build up sweat quickly, even in moderate temperatures. In the Colorado Rockies, this wasn’t a major problem but it’s a factor to consider for those who live in humid or steamier environments.
Still, for short trail runs in the 5–7 mile range or as a low-risk way to test out hydration vests for beginners, the Kiprun Essential delivers performance and value that’s tough to beat.
Ultimate Direction Race Vest 6L

The Ultimate Direction Race Vest 6.0 ($155) lives up to its name with a streamlined design and low weight that make it ideal for carrying the essentials you’d want on race day. Ultimate Direction didn’t overhaul the vest for this version, but the small refinements in fit and pocket layout help it feel light, fast, and ready to rumble.
GearJunkie Staff Writer Heather Balogh Rochfort tested the vest on mountain runs in the Colorado Rockies outside Aspen and found the fit to be secure and steady. Even with the back loaded with a rain jacket, snacks, and car keys along with two water flasks up front, the vest stayed in place without bouncing or shifting. The bungee cord closure that attaches to a daisy chain was another highlight. It adjusts quickly, stays out of the way, and doesn’t interfere with breathing on climbs or faster efforts. As the temperatures warmed into the 70s during Colorado’s unusually warm late fall, Balogh Rochfort noted that the vest remained lightweight and breathable throughout her runs.
Pocketing is straightforward and functional. The two zippered pockets up front are just the right size for a cell phone, and the rest of the storage supports short to mid-distance outings without adding unnecessary bulk. While Ultimate Direction positions the Race Vest 6.0 as a race-day pick, Balogh Rochfort used it strictly for everyday trail running and found it well suited for that purpose. Tradeoff: The white color is a bold choice. It took less than three minutes for dirt and snack shrapnel to make this vest look “well loved.”

It’s easy to adjust and straightforward in a way that suits everyday training runs, or beginners who are learning to navigate runs with a hydration pack.
GearJunkie contributor Heather Balogh Rochfort tested the pack on Colorado mountain trails and found the storage to be exactly what Nathan promises: minimal but functional. The main back pocket shares space with the included hydration bladder (though the bladder sits in its own sleeve) and is large enough to stash an extra layer or lightweight jacket along with gloves. Up front, the vest keeps things simple with one zippered pocket large enough for a phone on one side and two stretchy pockets on the other for gels or one flask (although those aren’t included).
The fit relies on wraparound webbing straps rather than the body-hugging pocket structure used by vests like the Salomon Adv Skin 12. Balogh Rochfort noted that the system works well for light loads, keeping the vest in place without shifting. When carrying more, it’s not quite as comfortable. But again, the pack size naturally limits how much weight you can bring anyway.
The included bladder is a nice bonus for the price, and the reflective patterning and bright yellow colorway (if you choose it) add welcome visibility for early-morning or after-work runs.

The CamelBak Apex Pro Vest ($198) is built for runners who go long — really long! With oodles of storage and a structure that blurs the line between a traditional running vest and a lightweight pack, it’s a top choice for big days, ultra distances, or just long days in the mountains.
Storage is the Apex Pro’s headline feature. The back houses a large zippered pocket with an internal mesh sleeve for organization, plus a smaller zippered pocket up top for keys or a credit card. Wraparound stash pockets along both sides give runners access to gear on the move. Up front, two flask pockets (with included 17-ounce flasks), two larger stash pockets with internal mesh dividers, and two roomy zippered pockets give the vest more storage than many people will ever actually fill. Tradeoff: If you fill the front zippered pockets too full, the heft may get in the way of your arm swing.
Testing the pack in the Colorado Rockies, GearJunkie Staff Writer Heather Balogh Rochfort never came close to maxing out that capacity. She also appreciated the removable trekking pole quiver, though she did notice some bouncing when she used it. The vest rides high on the back and delivers a solid, low-bounce fit, or at least as stable as a high-capacity running vest can be. It’s compatible with a hydration bladder, though it doesn’t come with one.
For sizing, Balogh Rochfort wore a small at 5’5″ and found it true to size, though she had to crank down on the chest straps for the most secure fit. The Apex Pro is undeniably pricey, but for runners who routinely push into long-mile terrain, it offers the storage, stability, and details to make it worth the investment.

Night owls and early-morning grinders rejoice! Gone are the days of purchasing extra annoying light belts or clip-ons for your low-vis endeavors. Nathan’s Laser Light Pack ($120) is the all-in-one hydration, storage, and lighting package of your dreams.
A 6-lumen light thread winds its way along the back of the pack, with three different modes: solid, strobe, or slow blinking. A lightweight on/off button is conveniently placed on the left shoulder strap.
Despite being wired up, this vest boasts a respectable weight at 12.4 ounces, and the strap with the button doesn’t bounce at all while leaping around technical trails, or bolting down the road. The lights take two CR2032 lithium batteries, with an impressive 30+ hour burn time.
We do wish that the light thread also illuminated a bit on the front of the vest, as it is also important to be noticed by oncoming traffic — but bright reflective strips on the shoulder straps provide adequate visibility.
Soft perimeter bindings left our tester with zero signs of chafing, and breathable mesh back panels and straps provide adequate ventilation when night temps are high. It’s not the most breathable design, but since this is made for night runs, we don’t sweat as much while wearing it. Two adjustable straps run along the side, which allow you to dial in the fit, but aren’t the easiest to tweak while actively running.
The pocket layout on this vest is quite basic. There is one zippered pouch on the left shoulder strap big enough for iPhones and two simple cinched and elasticated drop-in pockets on the right strap. There is only one main zippered pocket on the back, with a separate space for its 1.5L bladder. The 3L capacity doesn’t afford much storage, but it has been enough for most of our running needs.

Patagonia’s redesign of its Slope Runner Vest ($169) shows serious trail running acumen and demonstrates that non-running-specific brands have a place in the run space. Specifically, brands that spend a large amount of time on R&D, which is clear that Patagonia did with the Slope Runner. This vest was tested and refined by real runners on the trail and is packed full of features that just make sense.
First up — the number of stashable pockets. Nothing’s worse than doing a continual on-and-off-pack dance to grab a snack, ditch your gloves, or add a hat. The Slope Runner’s front panels are divided into the typical water-bottle pockets and then, lower down, two wide and stretchy compression pockets. At first, we were disappointed by the lack of a zippered option here, but found that the elastic is tight enough to stash snacks, phone, or keys with ease (and no jangle). Time will tell if stretching out is a problem, but so far, there have been no accidental drops.
If we had one issue, it was the water bottle placement. Slightly low for on-the-go sipping, but each runner has different torso proportions, so that might not be an issue for you. And if you’re looking to do a full day in the mountains, you’ll likely need more storage. But for minimalist long runs or quick strike summit missions, this was one of our go-to choices.

Anyone who runs in hot climates will appreciate the breathable Nathan Sports VaporAir 4.0 8L ($160). At just 13 ounces, this pack won’t weigh you down. But it’s big enough to hold all the race-day necessities.
It comes with a 2L hydration bladder, and the front storage pockets can easily fit 22-ounce soft flasks (sold separately). The VaporAir 3.0 has been revamped to reduce sloshing while bounding about.
Our testers didn’t have any problems with chafing and appreciated the breathable, mesh-like fabric. The 3.0 delivers a number of thoughtful upgrades that boost the comfort and useability of this pack, with new wicking air mesh over the shoulders and around the back for even greater breathability than the already mega-ventilated 2.0.
A new Adaptive-Fit adjustable sizing system gives the runner a tailored, body-mapped fit that can be easily tweaked on the go. Simply unzip a pocket on each shoulder strap, and pull the elasticated webbing inside. This automatically cinches in the side panels and proved to be one of the quickest methods of snugging up a load that we’ve ever seen.
Side toggles on the VaporAir and VaporAiress 3.0 (women’s model) allow you to carry trekking poles, and the back kangaroo pocket is perfect for easily stashing an extra layer.
We’ve been fans of these nifty vests for years, and the updated 3.0 adds even more value to an already legendary design.

The Osprey Duro 1.5 Hydration Vest ($120) has everything you need in one sleek package. The medium/large size holds 1.5 L of water, and the small/medium carries 1 L. The lower stretch mesh and zippered pocket offered up just enough room for us to fit a light shell and snacks.
Both our male and female testers were able to get a comfortable, no-bounce fit thanks to the variety of adjustment straps. The double front clips are adjustable and help hold everything in place, even with a full bladder.
Speaking of which, this hydration vest comes with Osprey’s unique Hydraulics reservoir. The streamlined design allows for easy loading, and we like that it lays flat in the pack.

Arc’teryx pulled out the design bells and whistles with the Norvan 7 ($160), building a vest with capacious pockets that swallows (seemingly) more than its advertised 7 L. Built from a stretchy mesh, the Norvan is comfortable and breathable. The two chest straps are built from hook and loop cords, allowing for easy release while wearing gloves. The front dump pockets are spacious, even when stuffed with gels and bars they fit a running hat with ease.
The only adjustment points on this vest are the two chest straps, which makes proper sizing important. What initially appear to be adjustment points is a myriad of attachment points for trekking poles, ice axes, and even a helmet. The hem of the vest is lightly elastic and stretches with added layers, but can’t be cinched by the wearer.
The Norvan is the rare running vest that works better loaded down. Our tester was initially skeptical of the vest, which bounced when lightly loaded with flasks and nutrition. But on his first loaded-down long run, our tester was impressed with this vest’s performance. He did find that by crossing the two chest cords in an X, you could squeeze out some extra compression when needed.
The Norvan 7 works well fully loaded for the mountains, breathes impressively, and its dump pockets swallow gear with aplomb. Just make sure to size correctly, since its adjustability leaves something to be desired.

Heather Balogh Rochfort is the most recent author of this guide and a runner for the last 20 years. Our Testing Process
We tested a variety of vests and packs while running a variety of terrain, ranging from the sandstone-laden deserts of southern Utah to the rugged ridgelines of the Elk in Central Colorado. Our testers have bushwhacked through Gambel oak, scrambled up peaks, and run smooth single track to test out the capabilities of these vests and packs.
We’ve tested every feature and put these packs and vests through their paces. The fabric has been stretched and stained, every pocket has been tried out, and the organizational systems explored. We’ve learned things about these packs and vests that the manufacturers don’t even advertise, and we’re doing our best to convey everything we’ve learned to you, whether this is your first running vest, or you’ve worn your last one to pieces.

Buyers Guide: How to Choose a Hydration Pack for Running
Running packs and vests come in all shapes and sizes. It’s important to consider what kinds of runs or adventures you plan to use your pack on when choosing the right one for you.
If you typically run a few miles a week, a recreational vest will be plenty. But if you have race ambitions, you may want to choose something more technical and geared toward performance. If you want to keep your gear closet slimmed down and like multipurpose gear, a hydration pack might be better for use while hiking, running, and even on overnight trips.
Read on to learn more about what to consider while choosing a running vest or pack.
Types of Running Vests

Recreational
Recreational running vests are more affordable than more technical options. That makes them a great first pick for someone who has never used a running vest before and wants to try one out.
Recreational running vests like the Nathan Hypernight Quickstart 3.0 4L vest typically hold 1-2 L of water, enough for a 1-2 hour run or a race with lots of aid stations. They might have one main compartment and a few additional places to stash snacks, phones, and other necessities. But they’re not going to have all the bells and whistles of a more performance-oriented pack.
Performance

Running vests can look like a lot of different things. But they are generally oriented towards all-day runs, long trail races, ultra marathons, and technical trails.
Performance running vests like the Ultimate Direction Race Vest 6.0 typically use higher-quality materials which can make them more comfortable over longer periods of time. They also have many more features and ways to organize your gear, such as more pockets, pole and/or ice axe attachments, and unique ways to adjust the fit.
These vests can run a bit more on the expensive side, but are important elements of an ultramarathon kit, and are built to boost comfort and keep you hydrated in rough, remote environments. They are designed to reduce chafing over the long run, and be worn all day (and all night on occasion), without wearing the athlete down.
Fastpacking

Fastpacking is distance trail running and backpacking at the same time. You’re running or hiking quickly, and while going light is a necessity, you still need enough gear to be safe and comfortable (enough).
For fastpacking, you need a pack that can move with you for long periods of time, but also carry enough gear for multiple days. That’s hard to come by, as many backpacks designed for day hiking are heavy and don’t have the features to carry the gear you need, but backpacking backpacks are far too bulky.
So fastpacking running vests and packs have emerged that walk the line between running vest and daypack. They have enough capacity to fit overnight gear but still fit close enough to the body that it’s not distracting while running.
Bottles vs. Reservoirs
Different types of hydration packs and running vests have different ways to carry water. The amount of water you want to carry will depend on how far you are going. For a 1-2-hour run, you will probably only need ~1 L of water. Whereas if you’re out all day, you might want up to 3-4 L of water throughout the day. Most running vests can hold up to 3 L of water — a 2 L reservoir and two 500 mL flasks.
Most running vests and hydration packs have space for a hydration reservoir in the back. This looks like a sleeve to slip a reservoir into. The best options have a way to hold up the reservoir so that while you’re drinking from it, it doesn’t slip down in the sleeve.

Some of the options on this list like the Decathlon Kiprun Essential 5L trail running vest come with reservoirs, while others do not, like the Camelbak Apex Pro Vest. That’s something to consider before purchasing. Also, consider the size of the reservoir. Most running vests and packs can fit a 1-2 L reservoir.
Some running vests also have pockets for flasks in the front. Many of them also come with flasks, which is something to consider when choosing a running vest. When flasks are positioned properly, you can drink while on the move, which is key for any sort of running hydration.
Flasks can also have a lighter weight than reservoirs. However, some tend to fall down or are hard to reach without a lot of work while on the move. Look for elastics to hold flasks in position even when they’re partially empty. Flasks also tend to be specific fits for each brand, so don’t plan on using a Balck Diamond flasks for an Arc’teryx vest, or vice versa.
Many runners prefer one hydration method or the other, while others use both. However you choose to hydrate, you just need to make sure to bring enough water for your run.
Capacity: Water & Gear

How much capacity you need will depend on what your runs typically look like. Someone whose average run is a 5-mile road run will have different needs than someone whose average run is a 20-mile mountain run.
Running vests and hydration packs come with anywhere between 2 L and 20 L of storage space, with packs like the Patagonia Slope Runner weighing in on the smaller side at 3 L. That typically describes the size of the main compartment, however many have lots of other pockets and features to stash gear. Think about what you might want to bring on most runs, and find a pack or vest that fits that amount of stuff.
If we’re going for a trail run, we usually prefer to bring at least one layer, snacks, and up to 3 L of water. On mountain runs where the weather is variable, we may bring two layers or other emergency gear. To fit all that, we’ll need at least a 5 L pack (like the Arc’Teryx Norvan 7 at 7 L). Even better, a10-12 L pack like the Salomon Adv Skin 12 is very comfortable.
When thinking about how much water you need, consider if you will have any opportunities to refill. If you’re running a race, how many aid stations are there? How long is the furthest distance between them? It’s not worth bringing too much more water than you need, since that will just weigh you down. However, it’s a fine line to run since water is a necessity while on the move.
If you’re in the mountains, are there any opportunities to fill up water from natural sources? Just make sure to bring a water filter or some way to treat water if so.
Sizing

Getting the right fit is key for any piece of gear, but especially for a running vest. When possible, head to your local running store and ask for a fitting. For online shopping, take the time to measure yourself and refer to sizing charts.
Running vests should fit snuggly, without any bounce. You want it to feel more like a piece of clothing than a backpack. Ideally, you shouldn’t feel it move when you’re running. Some vests have elastic toggles to help customize the fit or accommodate layers while others have minimal adjustment points. Honing in on the right fit is key for a good experience.
Organizational Features
Extra features can make the difference between an OK vest and an awesome one. There are so many additional organizational features on different running vests. Here are a few we see a lot:
Trekking pole attachments: If you like running with poles, it’s great to have a way to stash them if you get tired of using them, or get to a section of trail you don’t need them.
Zippered pockets: Front zippered pockets are useful for phones so they don’t fall out of stretch pockets (it’s happened to one of our testers!).

Stretchy pockets: Stretch pockets of any size are great for not taking up space unless you need them to. Breathability
When you’re out on runs it’s important to wear clothes and use gear that breathes well. Staying dry, or drying quickly, can be the difference between comfort and hypothermia, especially in cold months or cold climates. And in the warm months, it can make the difference between a sluggish run and a feel-good run.
Many running vests are made out of material that allows them to wick sweat or dry off quickly. Mesh materials can vent heat and keep you cooler. Or some vests and packs use ventilation to keep you cool while on the move.

Comfort

The ideal running vest is not distracting while on a run. If you’re trying on running vests, add some weight to them (water, layers, etc) and run or bounce up and down to mimic running. See if you notice the running vest. If you do, it will probably distract you, or even worse, chafe while on a long run.

It’s important to stand out when running on the trail or road — primarily in low-vis scenarios or after dark. During late-night dashes and early-morning jaunts along busy roads or mountain biking trails, lights and/or reflective strips are a must.
