Leatherman Recall: Multi-Tool Blade Defect Poses ‘Laceration Hazard’

A defect with the Leatherman Charge and Charge Plus can prevent the multi-tool's blades from closing completely. Here's what you need to know.

Last week, Leatherman issued a voluntary recall for its Charge Plus and Charge Plus TTi multi-tools over a manufacturing defect that prevented some units’ blades from closing completely. Leatherman notes this poses a laceration risk to users, although no reports of injuries have been received.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is assisting Leatherman in the recall, lists the number of units included by this recall at 17,000. Leatherman requests owners of Charge Plus and Charge Plus TTi multi-tools stop using the product and check to see if their tool is impacted by this defect.

Here’s how to check if your Leatherman is included in this recall.

Leatherman Charge Recall

According to Leatherman, defective units were manufactured and sold between July 2024 and March 2025. These multi-tools retailed for $150-200 at a variety of hardware and cutlery stores, REI Co-op locations, and online at REI.com, Leatherman.com, and Amazon.

To determine if your multi-tool needs to be repaired as part of this recall, Leatherman asks owners to follow the simple steps below:

  1. Close your tool so that all blades are safely stowed.
  2. Lay it flat on a table with the “LEATHERMAN CHARGE” logo facing you.
  3. Examine the knife blade from the side view.
  4. If the tip of the knife blade is visible when the tool is closed (as shown in the first image above), your tool is affected.

However, if the blade tip completely hides inside the handle (see image below), your tool closes properly and does not require service.

If the test confirms your tool has the defect, you can begin the free repair process using Leatherman’s Charge Recall Form. Leatherman will then provide a prepaid shipping label for you to return your tool to the brand’s repair center. Customers will not need proof of purchase.
