How far can $15K go toward turning a stock vehicle into a rock-chewing monster? That’s the question the folks at backcountry map app onX hope to answer with its Offroad Build Challenge series. The contest pits three teams of 4×4 content creators against each other in a months-long off-road competition.

Each team starts with a stock vehicle, and then applies its limited budget to upgrades and modifications. Then it’s out into the wild to see how wise each decision was.

As the series progresses, the challenges will get gnarlier. Success will be determined by engineering, experience, and driver skill. But it’s viewers who will ultimately decide which team gets to represent onX at the 2023 Motortrend Ultimate Adventure by casting votes for their favorite contestants.

In this first video, the teams head to Moab, Utah, in their stock vehicles to get a sense of what needs improvement. The answer is, unsurprisingly, a lot. The series should be a fun watch as these drivers turn coal into gasoline-powered diamonds. Follow along at the onX Offroad YouTube Channel, and then bounce over to the onX website to cast your vote.
