A small number of Decathlon’s Rocky Screwgate carabiners could unlock, leading to dangerous situations.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced the recall of a Decathlon-brand locking carabiner, citing incorrect assembly. The affected ‘biners are pear-shaped, aluminum, blue or yellow Simon Rocky Screwgates.

The Canadian product recall reports users noticed that “the carabiner’s screwgate was assembled upside down, which can cause unpredictable unlocking.” Obviously, climbers know this could result in injury or death. Whether you’re using a locking carabiner to hook up to a belay system or to build an anchor, it’s a critical, life-and-death connection.

The recall affects only a very small number of manufactured units — about 50 carabiners in the U.S. and 190 in Canada. But given the critical nature of this piece of equipment, climbers should be aware of this recall. The sport of climbing is actually very low-risk — as long as you have the proper knowledge and equipment as well as practice safety measures both on indoor and outdoor climbs.

Decathlon Carabiner Recall

According to the CPSC, the recall applies to the Rocky Screwgate aluminum and pear-shaped carabiners with a small gate and screwgate. Decathlon sold them under the Simond brand in yellow (item number 1760147) and blue (item number 1759997). The brand name is on the side; the item number is harder to find, as it was on the cardboard hangtag.

Decathlon recommends consumers immediately stop using any recalled Rocky Screwgate ‘biners. It will issue a refund upon return. Founded in France, Decathlon is a major outdoor gear retailer with over 1,500 stores in 49 countries.  Decathlon removed the recalled product from its website, and this recall doesn’t affect any other models of Decathlon carabiners.

Consumers who own them should call 866-480-3565 or email customer.service@decathlon.com. Visit the Product Recalls section of Decathlon’s website for more information.
