As wildfires devastate California families, a Montana backpack company helps rebuild part of what was lost for sportsmen and sportswomen affected by the Camp Fire.
As the dubiously dubbed Camp Fire swept across northern California, it consumed over 18,000 structures, 153,000 acres, and, as of today, 85 lives. It’s at 100 percent containment right now, and three firefighters have been injured in their battle to save communities at risk. The fire ranks as the most destructive and deadliest in California’s history.
It’s a bleak story. As the fire burned, it blazed a path of uncertainty for the many thousands of lives it touched. Among those lives are hardcore outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen. And a backpack company in Montana is seeking to help their cause by replacing the hunting and fishing gear lost in the fire.
Stone Glacier Makes an Impact
Stone Glacier’s founder Kurt Racicot had the need for ultralight gear that could stand the test of time and increase a hunter’s range in the backcountry. This stemmed from Racicot’s specific needs as a sheep hunter.

On a personal level, I’ve always appreciated Stone Glacier’s unwavering commitment to conservation. It’s a 2% for Conservation certified organization that supports both the Wild Sheep Foundation and the Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance. And the brand works with nonprofits by donating and discounting gear for fundraising activities.
Now, Stone Glacier is expanding this ethos into assisting wildfire victims.
What You Can Do to Help
The team at Stone Glacier has put together the NorCal Sportsmen’s Gear Drive. It’s asking the hook and bullet community to donate their used gear. From pants and boots to youth equipment and archery gear, it’s all fair game.
If you have some used gear around, you need a feel-good reason to upgrade, or you’re so generous you buy some new gear to throw in the donation pile, well, it couldn’t go to a better cause.
The Stone Glacier crew will be driving the gear out themselves. And they’re also organizing a pickup location in California that will be announced shortly.
