Winter may be coming for much of the lower 48, but for part of California, winter’s already here. On Friday, Oct. 29, Palisades Tahoe will open its world-class slopes to the pow crowds.

From drought to wildfires to bomb cyclones, 2021’s been one helluva a year for the state of California. And this week, some of the state’s mountains received near-record snowfall, prompting Tahoe’s most iconic (recently renamed) ski resort, Palisades Tahoe, to open its upper ski areas a month ahead of schedule.

Near-Record Snowfall in Upper Ski Areas

According to resort officials, the recent storm deposited more than 3 feet of fresh snow on the upper mountains ski areas. A look at its Snowfall Tracker page shows that the Palisades ski area (at 8,000 feet elevation) received 35 inches between the mornings of Sunday, Oct. 24, and Monday, Oct. 25.

This year’s surprise opening is one of the earliest in the resort’s multigenerational history and its first pre-Halloween opening since 2004.

“We can’t wait to welcome you back and make some turns this Halloween weekend. Costumes are highly encouraged,” reads the announcement issued by Palisades on Tuesday.

Palisades Tahoes Opening Day Information

Opening day lift operations will run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Bonus: Through Nov. 1, the resort will continue to run its preseason discount on the Tahoe Super and Midweek 4 Packs.

Purchase single or group passes and lift tickets at palisadestahoe.com, or pick up a multi-resort season pass at ikonpass.com.
