Marianne Vos Wins La Course of the Tour de France

Dutch cyclist Marianne Vos made an impressive statement on Friday, taking the win at La Course of the Tour de France. Her win at the one-day women’s counterpart to the Tour de France (racing the Tour’s stage 13 course) follows a strong performance at the Giro Rosa, where she won four stages. It was the first major win for Vos since an injury sidelined her in 2015. Read the full story on Bicycling.

Misadventure on a Lake Superior Jetski

Jetskier Dave Crevenston decided to make the 22-mile trip to Isle Royale in Lake Superior alone last week. Things didn’t exactly go as planned.  The captain of a freighter plucked him from the lake about 7 hours later. According to one report, Crevenston got disoriented in the fog, then ultimately became lost when night fell.

But while safe, Crevenston’s adventure was not over once onboard the freighter. He had to continue on with the ship’s intended route and wound up in Sault Ste. Marie. Then he had to fly to Toronto, then Thunder Bay, Ontario. From there, he paid about $160 for a cab ride back to the marina, where his adventure had begun. Read the full story here.

Angler Misses Halibut Record by 2 Pounds

A fisherman in Norway hooked onto a whopper of a halibut, even breaking a fishing rod during the process of landing it. But while he did get it to the boat, the official weight — 416 pounds — came in just 2 pounds shy of the world record of 418 pounds for Atlantic halibut. But a report indicates that after a photoshoot, angler Christer Carlund released the beast. Now it has even more time to grow up!

Just moments after crossing the finish line to crush California’s Badwater 135 ultramarathon record by more than an hour, Japanese ultra-athlete Yoshihiko Ishikawa dropped to one knee and proposed to his girlfriend. And thankfully, some spectators got it on video. Congrats to Ishikawa and his now-fiancée! And if you want to watch a tear-jerker, check out the video and full report here.

K2 Climbers Thwarted

A record number of climbers headed to K2 this year, but conditions near the summit made the climb nearly impossible. According to one climber, waist- to chest-deep snow on the traverse and the final 200m snow ramp made the final meters to the summit impossibly dangerous.

All climbers have now descended. A handful of climbers, including pros like Adrian Ballinger, Esteban Mena, Carla Perez, Namgye Sherpa, and Pemba Geljen, climbing without oxygen, are giving the mountain another go. Read the full story, as well as updates on other mountains in the Karakorum, here.

New FKT on Sangre de Cristo Traverse

A lesser-known but very difficult route, the Sangre de Cristo Traverse in Colorado covers about 103 miles, with about 53,000 feet of vert while covering 77 peaks. It tags five 14,000-foot peaks and 33 13,000-foot peaks along the way.

Only 9 miles are on the trail. And Justin Simoni did the entire route unsupported in a time of about 6 days, 14 hours, and 57 minutes, setting a new FKT in the process. He finished the dash on Sunday evening near Salida. Check out his full route here.

Tour de France Road Gap

In case you missed this yearly tradition that went down last week, here’s the annual Tour de France Road Gap. In it, cyclist Valentin Anouilh launches over the racing peloton for some epic footage.
