The dream of a hoverboard launched into a generation of young minds by Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly in “Back To The Future” has finally become a reality.
No, it won’t work riding down city streets just yet, but it looks like this hoverboard will really work! We haven’t seen it in person yet, but check out the video below.
We’re going to go right out and say it: If this is a hoax, we’ll be pissed. People have been burned by this one before. But darned if this doesn’t look like the Real McCoy, enough so that it’s already raised more than $70,000 on Kickstarter.
The Hendo Hover works by creating a magnetic field that “pushes against itself,” according to the company. This generates the lift, which levitates the board about an inch off the ground.
There are some pretty huge caveats with the new board: It only works above a surface that is a non-ferromagnetic conductor, as in a conducting material that magnets won’t stick to.
And then there’s the price. For now, it’ll cost you $10,000.
But dang, to see a real hoverboard in action, well, there’s one childhood fantasy to check off the list.
If you’d like to learn more about the project, check out the Kickstarter campaign. The company claims that, with research and development, an affordable version is not far away.
