Our new contest with Spot LLC, ‘Checkpoint: SPOT’, kicked off earlier this month, and we’re happy to report our second winner! Jason Chase-Dobiash of Monument, Colo., pegged a checkpoint in Colorado in our nationwide treasure hunt event and snagged himself a sweet piece of swag — Suunto’s new Core Glacier watch!
The Suunto Core Glacier gathers a range of data needed for the outdoors — it has an altimeter, barometer and compass plus a depth meter, sunrise and sunset times, and a menu in four languages.
Chase-Dobiash said he was in the market for this kind of watch, so the win was serendipitous. He said he searched for the checkpoint — clue was “Divine Plot,” and the lat/long 38.87677 / -104.880108 — by “using a Google satellite map, narrowing it down to a 10-foot radius on a paved trail, and sending a bunch of check-in/OK messages in a grid” with his smartphone-compatible SPOT Connect device.
He nailed the checkpoint, which was within Garden of the Gods park near Colorado Springs. Chase-Dobiash said he uses his SPOT device on hiking, mountain biking, camping, and mountaineering trips. His family recently started a goal of summiting all 54 of Colorado’s 14ers, and the altimeter and compass on the Suunto will be a needed tool, he told us.
Congrats to Chase-Dobiash! There are 10 unclaimed ‘Checkpoint: SPOT’ locations still on the contest map here. Sign up and register for your chance to win! Promotion runs through October 31, 2011. Good luck!
