Kitted lets you jump into a new activity or update your closet with this season’s top gear, selected by experts at Cairn. If you don’t like it, return it.
Don’t be fooled — Kitted™ isn’t a subscription box service. Each collection offers a noncommittal chance to dive into the outdoors or a seasonal activity on a trial basis.
The experts at Cairn have been curating outdoor goods for the brand’s well-known subscription boxes since 2014. Now, they’re bringing their deep industry knowledge and hands-on experience to this new, try-before-you-buy program.
The Cairn team researches and tests gear made for all kinds of activities — including hiking, running, and skiing — and creates capsule collections based on their favorite gear. From these Kitted Collections (pictured below), you choose the pieces you want to test for yourself outside, not in a dressing room.

Every season, Cairn refreshes its kits, and you can check each out throughout that season. From any kit, you pick up to five items you’d like to try and pay a $25 curation fee to have that custom kit shipped. That cost is credited toward any purchase of $100 or more.
After testing it for a week, you pay only for items you keep, then return the rest. The more you choose to buy, the larger discount you’ll receive. There are no shipping fees.
Once you return a kit, you can check out another from that season. For example, once you check out the latest running gear, you can return what you don’t want from that kit and check out the hiking collection next.
It’s not just for you. You can go in with a friend and select women’s tights alongside a men’s puffy or keep two of the same. That’s a nice way to shop for yourself and a loved one’s gift at the same time.
Try a New Activity
One roadblock to a new activity can be buying a lot of gear to make your first foray comfortable and enjoyable. Let the informed buyers at Cairn do the research and trust their choices. Each kit lets you jump into the new hobby, decked out in up to five pieces of essential gear.
If you’re sold on the activity and the gear, you can keep some or all of it. What’s more, you can mix and match five pieces of gear from the different categories to create your own custom kit of new gear to test.
Freshening up your gear choices for an activity is another reason to shop. Kitted Collections are made from current gear, not leftovers passed on to you.
And if you do choose an upgrade, you can contribute your old gear to Cairn’s Gear Up, Give Back campaign. You get the latest and greatest gear, and your older gear will be used to make the outdoors more accessible for more people. It’s a win-win.
