Nicks’s main job is working as a Town planner for the Town of Crested Butte. Most of his writing experience is in planning documents and outreach to the community for feedback during plan development. He was excited by the opportunity to test and write reviews as a means to branch out from formal wiring for small government to something more creative in gear reviews.
When Nick isn’t behind the desk he spends all of his time outside enjoying the outdoors primarily on his splitboard or mountain bike. Nicks has always been an avid snowboarder since he switched from skiing in the late 90s. He’s called Crested Butte, Colorado home since he was one year old and has 30-plus years of experience in the surrounding mountains. He began splitboarding in the late 2000s on a homemade splitboard made using a table saw, self-epoxied side walls, and resort bindings mounted on the original voile metal slider plates. Ever since then, he’s been hooked on the sport.
When there isn’t snow on the ground Nick can be found pedaling away on his local mountain bike trails. His love for biking doesn’t go back as far as his passion for splitboarding, he didn’t get fully enamored with bikes until the late 2010s. Before that, he spent most of his time climbing any mountain he could from mellow backyard scrambles to technical climbs in the Wind River Range and the Grand Teton.
Career Highlights
A Word from Nick Catmur
I have always been enticed by the idea of being a gear tester so when I was approached by GearJunkie to do some test work I was very excited by the opportunity. It allows me to do what I love most while requiring me to be more engaged with the equipment I am using. I spend a lot of time outdoors so I am always happy to try new gear and put it through the wringer so that I am able to provide an honest take on how the equipment performs.
I have always tended to put my outdoor exploits before my professional career so the ability to combine the two of them is a dream come true. Some of those exploits I’ve prioritized include camping, biking, trail building, splitboarding, climbing, dabbling in skimo, and Star Wars.
