Light and strong are two words usually not used together when talking about bike locks. Urban cyclists carry hefty U-locks or big chains that can weigh up to 7 pounds to keep their bikes safe.
A U.K. company is hoping to change that with a flexible and light alternative.
The Litelok is a product designed to be lighter than any bike chain and more flexible than a U-lock. It provides the same security as many heavy-duty locks, the company touts.
At 2.2 pounds, the Litelok is one-third the weight of some chain locks from Kryponite and others, and it’s also lighter than many U-locks.
It can withstand a “prolonged attack” by bolt cutters or a hacksaw for up to five minutes, Litelok says.
The secret to the flexible strap is its malleable but hard-to-cut material, which the company calls Boaflexicore.
It’s 29 inches long, which is standard for this kind of lock. Two of the Liteloks can snap together if you need more length to secure multiple bikes.
The locking mechanism looks easy to use and closes without a key. For £70 — about $100 — you can order one after the project is funded.
The company is currently seeking funding to complete the first production run through a Kickstarter campaign. We’re on board to test this out and looking forward to lugging less weight around the city.
