Only the best surfers get invites to Oahu’s north shore for the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout.

On January 12, the legendary Bethany Hamilton and others showed why comp organizers punched their tickets. Hamilton, Moana Wong Jones, Keala Kennelly, and Bianca Valenti paddled out for their team’s heat midway through day 3 of the event and found prime conditions.

Hamilton disappeared into one of the biggest barrels of the day as waves topped 12 feet.

Wong Jones also dropped into a vehicle-sized tube and came out the other end in a particularly clean ride.

The Da Hui Backdoor Shootout holds its jersey-less competition each January in memory of Hawaiian surfing pioneer Duke Kahanamoku. In addition to shortboard surfing, it features bodysurfing, bodyboarding, longboarding, and SUPing.

If you feel like blowing off your Monday, you can watch all 9 hours of Day 3 here. Zane Kekoa Schweitzer won first place overall at the 2022 Shootout, which concluded on January 16.
