Enlightened Equipment Enigma Quilt Review:
Enlightened equipment builds custom quilts exactly to your liking—for a very reasonable price. At 14.1oz. the Enigma quilt is the lightest option in the bunch. Amazing attention to detail makes this quilt versatile in a variety of temps.
Based in Minnesota, this relatively small company is doing big things. Its custom quilts are, in a word — awesome. Not enough can be said about the “fun factor” of making your own quilt. You can choose degree rating, down fill, fabric, length, width, and color. It’s based on your needs and budget, so you can craft something that’s perfect for you.
Being a quilt, the Enigma doesn’t have a hood. You can opt for their Hoodlum if you want the extra warmth on cold nights. It’s a strange contraption, but it works in colder weather. Plus, the ability to leave the extra weight and bulk behind in warmer weather is really nice.
Tent Camping. I temp tested this on two occasions, at 30 degrees and 28 degrees, each with a wind chill around 23 degrees. I slept fairly well in midweight long underwear, but I woke up around 4:00 a.m. and wished I had a fleece.
Hammock Camping. I love hammock camping and quilts are a favorite among the hanging crew. Its zipperless design makes it easier to get in and out of the hammock and you can better manage your temperature.
Campervan Camping. I spent some time in Iceland last summer road tripping the country. This was the perfect bag because it’s so light and packs down super small.
What I Liked
I have been very impressed with the attention to detail in the quilt. The strap and clip system is particularly noteworthy. I loved being able to attach the lower half of the quilt to the pad to keep everything together while keeping the upper half open. There are several configurations, and when used properly, they really make a difference.
(If this is your first time using a quilt with straps, consult this page. There are a variety of ways to use the quilt with or without the straps to keep you comfy.)
My custom quilt weighed only 14.1 ounces; that’s amazing! Compared to other sleeping bags of this weight the price is unbeatable. Most brands only have a few short options (if any), yet Enlightened Equipment has a short version in every quilt and sleeping bag it makes.
The Hoodlum ($55) can be left at home to save weight on warmer trips. It’s made of Climashield Apex synthetic insulation, weighs 1.5 oz, and works in the 20-40 degree range.
To cap it all off, it’s filled with DownTek’s water-repellent down, so you don’t have to worry if it gets a little wet on your trip.
What I Didn’t Like
To be honest, not much. The quilt takes 3-5 weeks to ship since they are custom, and handmade.
Who Should Buy It?
Anyone looking for a lightweight quilt that fits perfectly. Enlightened Equipment’s custom quilts are hard to beat on quality, price, and awesomeness. Best used for backpacking, bikepacking, or any other form of lightweight travel.
