REI Lumen Sleeping Bag Review:

REI Lumen Sleeping Bag review

After a few nights freezing in a borrowed sleeping bag that was too big for me I decided to get a bag of my own. REI’s Lumen was my first short sleeping bag and it has become a trusty companion over the years.

For a while, this was my only sleeping bag and it worked in all but the coldest trips. I’ve used it for years of backpacking and camping in temps from 20 – 60 degrees.

At 2 lbs. 6 oz., it’s not idea for backpacking, but it works in a pinch. I’ve hauled it for miles along Minnesota’s Superior Hiking Trail with no regrets. As I’ve refined my gear I now look to other, lighter bags or quilts for backpacking trips.

This REI sleeping bag shines in all other 3-season camping situations. There is a good amount of room in the shoulders and a little extra in the feet, which is nice if you like to move around a little.

(Note: I tested the youth/short version of their regular Lumen bag. Also, the model I have is from 2011. There’s not much wrong with the design so they haven’t changed it substantially since then).

REI Lumen Sleeping Bag Stash PocketWhat I Liked

The price! It’s only $120 which is a good deal for something that will last for years. It has a small pocket in the hood that can hold your pillow (or puffy) in place while you sleep. Lastly, there’s a little zipper pocket on the front where you can stash Chapstick, earplugs, snacks, etc.

What I Didn’t Like

The synthetic polyester fill doesn’t pack down as well as a down bag. But it’s also less expensive — tradeoffs.

Who Should Buy It?

Any thrifty camper looking for a solid, 3-season sleeping bag. It’s 25-degree rating makes is a great choice if you’re looking for an all-around sleeping bag.
