Sloping, sculpted, and futuristic, the Altra Vanish Carbon 3 whisked under my feet in blindingly bright morning sun. The location — a rooftop track on a downtown Denver hotel — was surreal. I whipped around a corner, gazing up at the black windows of a skyscraper as foamy water dripped across the track from window washers 20 floors above.

While far from my usual running surface, the track was a fitting introduction to a shoe designed for comfortable speed. A few laps in, and I started thinking of the Vanish Carbon 3 as a “grand touring” shoe. Yes, it’s fast as hell. But unlike pure race machines, it was plenty roomy for comfort, particularly in the toe box.

The comparison with automotive styling should probably end there. These shoes certainly won’t hold up to a cross-country tour, and pay a lot more attention to human anatomy than horsepower. And now, after a few runs, including a solid 5-mile push on a flat pavement course near my house, I think Altra has a compelling, if niche, shoe in the Vanish Carbon 3.

In short: The Altra Vanish Carbon 3 is fast, light, and roomier than many of its “super shoe” competitors. It melds a hypercritical foam midsole and split-toe carbon plate with a wide forefoot. It offers a lot of spring. The wide forefoot shape really lets toes splay, a hallmark of the Altra brand. The split carbon plate aims to give the foot a more natural motion through the stride.

Altra Vanish Carbon 3: The Pitch

Altra just updated its super shoe, the Vanish Carbon series, with its third iteration. The Vanish Carbon 3 uses the brand’s lightest, most responsive foam coupled with a uniquely shaped carbon plate.

The carbon plate, as well as the shoe’s shape, takes center stage in this story. Carbon plates have transformed racing shoes by adding stiffness and propulsion. That can also change how the forefoot moves through toe-off. Altra claims it saw a design problem here and addressed it by splitting the plate at the big toe. According to the brand, it provides the structure runners need from a super shoe, and then separates at the big toe to allow for more natural movement and power.

Beneath the plate, FAST RCE, Altra’s lightest and most responsive supercritical, pure PEBA foam, supplies the rebound.

Above it, Altra’s signature roomy toe box gives the toes space to splay, while the unique eyestay design allows proper midfoot lockdown without restricting the toes. The eyestay design is an intentional detail that embodies Altra’s entire design logic: support the foot where it needs it, leave it alone where it doesn’t.

“We didn’t set out to build just another carbon racing shoe; we set out to build an Altra racing shoe,” said Kylee Barton, Head of Product at Altra. “Every element of the Vanish Carbon 3 was designed to work in harmony with the actual shape of the foot and our Altra Fit. The split-toe-carbon plate allows the foot to move, stabilize, and generate power more naturally, giving runners the propulsion they expect from a carbon plate while preserving natural movement. It’s race-day performance that works with the body, not against it.”

Altra Vanish Carbon 3 Review: Three Fast Tests

After meeting with Altra to learn about and get my hands on the Carbon 3, I set out to see for myself how it runs. First, I ran on the track on the aforementioned hotel roof. Then, I took it for a fast road run on a Sunday in Denver. Finally, I took it on my daily 3-mile morning loop, where it pounded sidewalk, park paths, and even a little gravel.

My take? It’s fast. Really fast. The Altra Vanish Carbon 3 rewards a powerful gait and mid-foot to forefoot landing. Its aggressive rockered toe above 4mm stack height encourages the runner to power off quickly.

Underfoot, the combination of pure PEBA and the carbon plate was remarkably springy. With an efficient stride, I felt very fast while testing this shoe. Of course, I’ve only put in 3 days in the limited time I’ve owned the shoe, but first impressions are that it’s a rocket.

I had a hard time telling whether the shoe gave me more flexibility in my big toe compared with other shoes. It does seem relatively compliant side to side, but it was difficult for me to judge. My biggest takeaway is that it felt fast and comfortable.

But it’s not a sports car. No, as I noted earlier, this shoe is quite spacious. On my last run, I focused on really letting my foot splay, and found that my toes could stretch broadly in the wide forefoot of the Vanish Carbon 3.

I liked the feeling a lot, but I suspect it won’t be for everyone. With the wide forefoot comes a looser feeling that might be a little disconcerting at high speeds in race-day situations. I didn’t have any problems and generally liked the wide fit. The heel and midfoot locked my foot into the shoe well, and I was largely quite stable when running fast.

Altra claims this shoe proved itself fast in quantitative testing. In the lab, the Vanish Carbon 3 improved running economy by 2.6%, compared with the Vanish Carbon 2. That rivals current super shoes on the market, Altra claimed.

Altra Vanish Carbon 3: Downsides

But I did note that when heel striking and with less efficient strides, the shoe was a little less stable. The back end of the shoe feels a little soft when heel striking, which gives it a bit of a mushy, side-to-side play. It’s easily avoided with confident, fast strides. But I suspect slower runners, beginners, and those with heavy heel strikes will really notice this. I don’t think Altra really intends this to be a back-of-the-pack shoe — it’s a carbon-plated super-shoe after all — but that’s something to take note of.

Altra was also clear that this shoe isn’t overly durable. While the brand doesn’t give a specific distance, in our meeting, representatives mentioned about 350 miles as a baseline for longevity. To be fair, that’s not at all bad for a race-day super shoe. But if you plan to wear it as a daily trainer, you can expect to burn through these fast.

Altra Vanish Carbon 3: Who It’s For

Blasting around my neighborhood in Denver at around 7-minute miles, I settled in and let my dog trot alongside me. The pavement whizzed along underneath, and my mind went still.

The Vanish Carbon 3 was so smooth, so fast, my tempo locked in, and I simply love it. I let my toes splay a little more than usual, and enjoyed the sensation.

To me, that moment captured the essence of the Vanish Carbon 3. It’s a shoe built to really move fast, but probably with a bit more of a nod to comfort than most super shoes. With that, it retains Altra’s soul as a low-drop, natural running company.

No, these shoes are nowhere near natural. They’re wicked fast and will help fast runners achieve great times in half and full marathons. But they do let you connect a bit with a wider foot and lower drop than many fast shoes.

So the Vanish Carbon 3 is for a fast runner, probably in the 10K-to-marathon distance, who wants to put down a fast time while maintaining a little more forefoot comfort. It seems a logical choice for those who have genuinely wide feet, or who dislike the snug fit of many race shoes.

And ultimately, the Vanish Carbon 3 is fast, very fast. So I don’t see it as much of a compromise compared with others on the market. Instead, it’s a new alternative, and one that some runners will certainly enjoy. I know I have, and I look forward to some more fast days to further inform this review in the near future.
