‘Dented, dinged, destroyed? No problem.’ GoPro will give you up to $100 for your old camera and ship you a new Hero5.
It’s been a rough year for GoPro. The action camera giant announced in November it will layoff 15 percent of its workforce, more than 200 employees, in an effort to cut its budget by $200 million. That came on the heels of a massive recall of its Karma drone and a slide in its stock price from $24 down to $8.50.
But today, in a move designed to breathe life into its latest Hero5 cameras, GoPro announced a “Trade Up” program for existing customers. In a nutshell, if you own an old Hero camera you can exchange it for $50 toward a Hero5 Session, or $100 toward a Hero5 Black.
And it doesn’t matter if it’s operational or obliterated. According to GoPro, “Cameras can be dead, missing components, or even melted in a fire,” and it will accept them.
GoPro ‘Trade Up’
The Trade Up program runs through May 11, so customers should act quickly. There’s no limit to the number of cameras you can trade up. GoPro will offer one Hero5 discount for each camera you send in.
The discount applies to the Hero5 Session ($250 after $50 discount) and Hero5 Black ($300 after $100 discount). Both are upgrades from previous models: They’re fully waterproof, have voice command, longer battery life, and improved image stabilization.

For all cameras, GoPro will pay for shipping. The company reminds customers to remove all media before shipping. It recycles and refurbishes everything it receives and will not return memory cards left inside.
Remember, the offer ends May 11. If you’re in the market, the Trade Up offer is a way to save a few bucks without the hassle of selling your old model on Craigslist or Ebay.
