National Geographic Adventure today announced its 2014 Adventurers of the Year. It revealed 10 extraordinary individuals and will let readers decide who is the overall Adventurer of the Year. This video introduces the finalists.

The picks this year include adventure educators Amy and Dave Freeman (crossed 11,647 miles of North America while 85,000 students helped shape their course); alpinists Raphael Slawinski and Ian Welsted (they solve one of alpinism’s last great puzzles); big-wave surfer Greg Long (came back to win the sport’s biggest title after nearly drowning); climber Adam Ondra (stands atop his sport at just 20 years old); community builders Stacy Bare and Nick Watson (the veterans use the outdoors to build community among soldiers returned from war); explorer Sarah Marquis (walks from Siberia to Australia over three years); long-distance Swimmer Diana Nyad (completes the first swim between the U.S. and Cuba without a shark cage); skier JP Auclair (re-imagines and then redefines his sport); ultra runner Kilian Jornet (one of the world’s top mountain runners); and snowboarder Kevin Pearce (finds new ways to lead his community after a head injury).

Voting ends January 31, so check out their stories and vote for your favorite.
