A peek at emerging products from the sometimes cutting-edge, sometimes quirky world of gear design.

Tough Lumix Camera

Record in 4K 102 feet below the water with the Lumix TS7 — but that’s just the start. It has a 20.4-megapixel camera and a 4.6X optical zoom lens. The TS7 is available now for $450.

Rugged Watches

The direct-to-consumer brand LIV launches four new models on Kickstarter this week. Dedicated to the P51 Mustang WW2 Plane, the GX P51 Swiss Auto Chronograph Pilot’s Watch is a titanium watch with ceramic bezel and a sapphire crystal. It has Sellita SW 500 Swiss movement and is water resistant to 100 meters. While the watch is expensive at $1,190, you can get early bird discounts on Kickstarter now. LIV also released dive, alarm clock, and chronograph watches.

Soft Trad Climbing Shoe

Scarpa Maestro Mid Eco Climbing Shoe Review

Climb long routes all day in the Scarpa Maestro Mid Eco. Scarpa redefines the idea of a trad climbing shoe with its use of a new rand. According to Scarpa, the shoe flexes and smears well, something not typically found in a trad shoe. But the difference, according to Scarpa, is that it’s still stiff enough for performance on small edges. Rounding out the shoe is its Eco leather, which reduces the environmental impact of tanning. It’s available now in men’s and women’s versions for $190.

Knife Maintenance Tool

CRKT Knife Maintenance Tool

Get under the hood of your everyday carry thanks to the CRKT Knife Maintenance Tool. Included in the tool are two folding TORX tools (T8 and T6), a ceramic honing edge, a tungsten carbide sharpener, and a flathead screwdriver. The Knife Maintenance Tool should let you disassemble most folding knives. It’s available now for $30.

'Photo Negative' Chacos

All white chacos

Show your strapped sandal pride with Chaco’s latest small-batch offering, the Photo Negative Collection. The brand’s Z/1, Z/2, and women’s ZX/2 designs are now available in white – straps, soles, buckles, and all. The collection is a limited run and available now for $130.

Portable Infrared Grill

Reach 1,000 degrees of grilling heat with Mr. Steak’s latest grill, the Portable Infrared Grill. While 1,000 degrees may be very hot, the infrared technology lets the grill heat to your desired temperature within two minutes. The Portable Infrared Grill is designed for travel, whether camping or at the beach. It has non-skid legs that fold up for transport and comes in one- and two-burner sizes. The grill works with propane and is available for $230-330.

Suspension-Corrected Gravel Bike

Otso Whaheela S

Otso’s latest build, the Waheela S, is a gravel bike designed for versatility thanks to its suspension-corrected geometry. The secret is its custom Wolf Tooth Headset, which can handle both non-suspension-corrected rigid and gravel suspension forks without sacrificing frame effectiveness. So if the trail is rugged, slap on a suspension fork, or if its smooth, a rigid fork — the bike geometry should feel the same. The Waheela S Bike is available now, starting at $1,999.

Waterproof Socks

Waterproof Sock

Don’t fret splashes above the shoe with Yatta Life’s Waterproof Socks. Made with bamboo rayon, nylon, and elastic, the socks are stretchy and breathable. Inside is a waterproof-breathable membrane that stops water but lets heat vent. Sure, you could just wear waterproof shoes. But if you’re in need of extra water protection, check out waterproof socks, available now for $44.

Future of French Press

A French press is a reliable choice for great coffee when camping, and the Rite Press helps perfect the process. From Rite Development Lab, the No Mess French Press has a removable cylinder that collects grounds, an integrated thermometer, and an attached timer. The design makes it easy to brew a great cup of coffee. This french press was just funded on Indiegogo and is available for $60.

Mesh-Networking Safety Device

Mesh Networking Goheart

If you’re stranded in the wilderness or just lost at a concert, the GoHeart Mesh is there to help. The GoHeart has an SOS button for quick access to other GoHeart users, text communication, GPS sharing, walkie-talkie function, and voice messaging. With mesh networking, the GoHeart connects your phone to other GoHeart users. While it looks similar to the GoTenna Mesh, check out the GoHeart’s Kickstarter page to see if it’s a fit for you.
