SRAM is set to issue a recall on aftermarket road shift-brake levers sold before July 1, 2023, and the brand told retail partners in a PDF shared by email. The recall will cover levers from the eTap AXS RED, Force, Rival, and Apex lines.
“This [recall] involves unsold aftermarket shift-brake levers only; levers on complete bicycles assembled at bicycle retailers are not involved in this recall,” the notice read. The PDF first reached consumer eyes via the forum weightweenies. GearJunkie and several other outlets later obtained it. Per Cycling News, SRAM plans to issue a formal recall “in the coming days.”
According to the document, “Excess thread lock on the shift-brake lever clamp bolt may result in the clamp not being tightened despite reaching recommended bolt torque. This may result in a shifter-brake lever which moves on the handlebar. If it moves during riding, it can cause a crash due to loss of control.” The brand has yet to say if any confirmed injuries have occurred due to the malfunction.
As of this writing, instructions regarding the recall are limited to those intended for retailers. Those instructions include “a stock sweep and quarantine all involved products.” SRAM plans to send retailers a kit that will repair two affected levers and a green sticker to affix next to the barcode on the repaired product’s packaging.
But it’s probably a wise idea to go ahead and make sure you aren’t using these levers while you wait for SRAM to make its formal announcement. In the PDF sent to retailers, SRAM provided the following list of part numbers affiliated with affected products.
