EVENT: The Big Gear Show Still On for August, More Brands Join. The newest player in the outdoor industry trade show arena is The Big Gear Show, hosted for the first time this year August 3-5 in Park City, UT. Over 250 brands are taking part in the outdoor show, including big names like Black Diamond, CamelBak, Giro, Osprey, Goal Zero, SCARPA, and more.

CLIMB: Team Sets Off on Grant-Winning Denali South Buttress Climb. The “Crampon Cowboys” team includes Ryan Wichelns (the trip’s leader), Robert Paulsen, Gabe Messercola, and Freddy Romero. The team of four has been planning and training for over 2 years for their historical expedition: to be the first in 25 years to climb Denali’s South Buttress (last climbed in 1996).

The team left on May 5 and should wrap up their expedition during the first week of June.

RECORD: Australian Cliff Diver Sets Record Diving Off Hot Air Balloon. Australia’s cliff-diving champion Rhiannan Iffland dove 18 meters from a hot air balloon over New South Wales’ Lostock Dam earlier this month, as part of Red Bull’s Cliff Diving World Series.

BRAND: Leigh Perkins, Founder of Orvis Brand, Dies at 93. Leigh H. Perkins, who took over The Orvis Company in 1965 and built it into an outdoor and angling powerhouse brand, passed away last week at the age of 93.

“We are saddened to announce the passing of Leigh (LHP) Perkins. Leigh fished and hunted more than 250 days a year into his 90s, always leaving the places he loved better for the next generation,” Orvis wrote online. Read his story in the New York Times.

CYCLE: Celebrate National Bike to Work Week. The League of American Bicyclists wants you to celebrate National Bike to Work Month, Week, and Day. Kick it off this week, May 17-23, by biking to work.
