Specialized Recalls 36,000 Bikes With Faulty Cranks

Seven people have suffered injuries after the crankarm on their Specialized Sirrus disengaged while riding. The brand is now recalling nearly 40,000 bikes across North America.

Consumers who purchased a 2019-2020 model Sirrus or Sirrus X should stop riding immediately and take their bike to an authorized Specialized dealer for inspection and potential repair.

Last week, Specialized initiated a voluntary recall of about 36,000 Sirrus and Sirrus X bikes in the U.S. and another 3,200 in Canada after it learned the crank arms could disengage from the bike while riding. The brand also said it received seven reports of injuries related to the defect, including a torn bicep tendon and other incidents of road rash.

Specialized Sirrus Bicycle Recall

According to Specialized, the issue affects bikes with two-piece slotted cranks. Specialized said these were not initially installed correctly. The recall asks anyone with a 2019 or 2020 Sirrus Sport or Sirrus X model to stop riding and bring their bike to an authorized dealer for a free repair.

For reference, affected bikes retailed at stores and online from September 2018 through June 2020 for $850 to $1,700. Consumers can identify their bikes by the name on the top tube.
