My story today for New York Times, “King of the Midwest Hills,” covers Lutsen Mountains, a resort overlooking Lake Superior in northern Minnesota where as a kid I learned to ski. Lutsen is the largest ski resort in Minnesota, and it is a worthy downhill destination with 92 trails and a respectable 1,088 feet of vertical drop.
Sprawled across four peaks in the Sawtooth Mountains of Minnesota, Lutsen’s trails cut through deep woods and drop to a snow-choked valley that conceals a creek. A gondola tram lift — unusual in the Midwest — carries red cars over the Poplar River and a mile away up Moose Mountain, connecting the main chalet with a far-off peak, where craggy views conjure an Alpine aura. “Lutsen is the best downhill skiing in the Midwest, pretty much hands down,” said Mike Terrell, Midwestern editor for Ski Press magazine.
